MINA MARGUERITE SLOAN (nee CLUBB) January 25, 1919 - May 16, 2014 After a long and full life Marguerite passed away peacefully at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her parents Gertrude and the Hon. W.R. Clubb; her husband and soul mate of 53 years R.H. (Harry) Sloan and all of her siblings; George in infancy, Garth Clubb, Catherine Mitchell, Wilma Christie and Shirley Martin. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Jane (Bob) Penston, Laura (Bishu) Fras, Alan (Brenda) Sloan and Brenda Stewart. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jennifer (Jason) Checkley, Jeff (Nadine) Penston, Craig (Sarah) Penston, Tyler (Allison) Sloan, Reid Sloan, Alan, Anna (Barrett) and Vanessa Stewart and seven great-grandchildren. "Aunt Maggie" is also survived by many nieces and nephews, their extended families, brother-in-law James Mitchell and sister-in-law Margie Clubb. Mom was born and raised on the family farm "Clover Lodge" just south of Morris, Manitoba. She moved to Winnipeg as a child with her family when her father entered the Legislative Assembly but the country remained in her soul. She attended Kelvin High School and the University of Manitoba, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She married Harry in 1947 and raised her four children in Winnipeg. She looked after her family and stood beside Harry as he progressed in his career with Great West Life even agreeing to uproot when Harry accepted a job at the G.W.L. head office in Denver, Colorado. Mom was an active, caring and giving person who loved people and the outdoors. She loved early morning swims, cross-country skiing, bird watching and of course working in her beloved garden. She always put others ahead of herself and was always giving of her time to her family, community and church. Neighbours and friends also benefitted from her giving as she always shared the bountiful harvest from her Morris garden. Mom met people easily and never forgot a name or relationship and as a result she had an extensive network of friends. Her "Bridge" friends were especially important to her. Mom also cherished her immediate and extended family and never hesitated to provide room and board to a niece or nephew, host "Gatherings" at the farm or open her home to anyone who stopped by. Clover Lodge farm remained in the family and became a part of Mom's soul. Summers were spent at the farm tending the garden, mowing the grass, trimming the trees and just enjoying the tranquility of her prairie retreat. Her last visit to Clover Lodge was last year as we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the summer home. She was surrounded by family and friends and it was a very special time. Marguerite's last four years were spent at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg. We would like to express our sincere thanks to all the staff and Mom's special companion for their loving and compassionate care. A reception in Marguerite's honour was held May 19, 2014 at Thomson in the Park Funeral Home in Winnipeg, followed by a private Interment at Morris, Manitoba.
