Date of Passing: May 17, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALIDA (LEAH) GEERTRUIDA WILHEMINA RYLAARSDAM (nee DE BEUNJE) At the Selkirk Hospital, unexpectedly, yet peacefully, surrounded by family, Alida (Leah) Rylaarsdam passed away at the age of 81 on Saturday, May 17, 2014. Leah leaves to mourn her beloved husband of 60 years, Arie, son Ray (Liz-Anne), daughter Dina (Paul), grandchildren Rosalie (Kevin), Ryan, Lindsay (Zach), Evan (Larissa), Reagan (Zack), great-grandchildren Rhea, Jaiden and Ivy; as well as relatives in the Netherlands and many dear friends. Mom and Dad married and immigrated to Canada in 1954 from the Netherlands to start a new life in Winnipeg where eventually Ray and Dina were born. We moved to Pinawa in 1965, and in 1971, Mom and Dad settled and made their life in Selkirk, where Mom worked as a Medical Technician at the Selkirk Hospital, and Dad worked as a Drafting teacher at the Lord Selkirk High School. Mom's life was filled with her music, playing electric guitar, art, reading, travelling, volunteering at the Gordon Howard Centre, the Betel Home, and most important of all, spending time with family and close friends. Mom was a wonderful, inspiring, honest, caring and accepting woman and memories of her will be forever cherished by our family and everyone that knew her. Special thanks to the nurses at Selkirk Hospital who made the last days and hours of Mom's life as comfortable as possible. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 23 at 1:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, MB. In lieu of flowers a donation in memory of Mom can be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 Wesley Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4C6. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

We became friends through my parents, Ray and Pat Fetterly, in Selkirk. I have been gone from Manitoba for many years but we used to visit my folks there and hang out with Leah and Arie at their place or McDonalds for the coffee morning. Lovely people, gracious and kind! You have your angel wings now Leah, let them soar and have peace. Hopefully, I'll meet you up there one day. I hope you will run into my dad and have a laugh together! Please give him a big hug from me. Thank you for being who you were on this earth and sharing your gifts with those around you. Leah was one of my favourite customers in the bookstore. Always ready with a story. She always knew my name and even outside of the store, she would stop and talk. Her "hellooooo, Lindsay!" always made me smile. - Posted by: Lindsay (Bookstore Gal) on: May 21, 2014
