DOROTHY RUTH SMALLEY
Born: Oct 04, 1935
Date of Passing: May 21, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOROTHY RUTH SMALLEY (nee KOLOTYLO) On the evening of Wednesday, May 21, 2014 mom passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital just waiting for the clouds to clear and the sun to come out. Mom is survived by her husband Joe, sons Rob (Joanie) and Brent (Suzanne), and grandchildren Ashley, Mannon, and Neil and her brother Frank. She is predeceased by her parents Katherine and Dmytro, sisters Nettie and Rose and brothers Donald, Jim and Joe. Born on October 4, 1935 in Rivers, MB Mom and Dad lived in Portage la Prairie where her children were born, and then a brief summer in Melville, SK. In 1970 we came to Winnipeg and have been here since. Both in Portage and Winnipeg, mom was employed by the Manitoba Telephone System until she and dad retired in 1991. Mom's priorities in life were very clear to anyone that knew her. Nothing would get in the way of watching her boys or grandchildren play baseball, softball, soccer or hockey. Mom's idea of celebrating Mother's day was to let the boys go golf early, and we could start the barbeque or go for dinner when we got back. This year we decided not to go golfing, and Mom and Dad shared their 58th wedding anniversary on May 12 the day after Mother's Day. It was very important to Mom that her grandchildren got to know and would remember their grandparents. That will not be a problem. She also taught us that whether it was missing keys or illness, if one of us needed help, be there now, not tomorrow. One of Mom's amazing attributes was remembering names and getting people to talk about their life and families, which only got stronger in the past year. That leads us to do something Mom would have wanted to do herself, which was thanking each and every individual that has looked after her since June of 2013. We cannot express a more sincere thanks to Dr. Ritchie and his staff and to the exceptional people from the second floor at Victoria General Hospital and Oncology Department. You don't know what a difference you made for our mother and our family. A Celebration of Mom's life will be held on Monday, May 26, 2014 at 1:00 at Wheeler Funeral Home, Cemetery & Crematorium 1800 Day Street. To the Smalley family, sorry to hear of your loss. Dorothy and I worked together at MTS for years. We sat side by side both in assignment then in dispatch. She was a warm, kind woman and she loved her family more than anything. Thru her eyes and stories I got to know her "boys" as they grew up to be young men. She had a great sense of humor and was nurturing to everyone that met her. Keep her memories close to your heart. - Posted by: Danielle Gladstone (co-worker) on: Jun 15, 2014

Rob and Brent, my condolences to you both and your dad. When I learned of mom's passing a lot of great memories came flooding back. She was a warm and wonderful person and I was proud to have known her. I still possess the dollar bill she gave me for my 18th birthday so long ago. It puts a smile on my face every time I see it. - Posted by: Mike Babb (Summertime Friend) on: May 24, 2014

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the whole Smalley family. "Doe" was such a great friend while I worked alongside of her at MTS. She was so smart, so sharp and quick-witted, she made the routine day at the office a lot of fun, especially for myself, Jo-Anne and Carol-Ann. After her retirement we continued to bump shoulders regularly at the hockey rinks, her grandson playing against my son. She never missed a game and always had STRONG opinions of every tactic on the ice, all in fun of course. So sorry to hear of her passing, Dave Coffell (and Monique) - Posted by: Dave Coffell (co-worker and friend) on: May 23, 2014
