DANIEL MELNICK With the birds singing outside his window and daughter Jan by his side, Dan left us in the early morning on May 24, 2014. He missed Nettie so much that he felt a seven week head start was long enough. He is survived by daughter Janalee (Ken) Fedorchuk, son Miles (Laurie); grandchildren Christy (Barry) Woytowich, Ginette (Robert) Helgason, and Aaron (Melissa) Fedorchuk; great-grandchildren Colten and Tiffany Woytowich and one more due in July to Aaron and Mel; brothers Tom (Esther) of Whitemouth and Ed (Irene) of Waldheim, SK along with many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by wife, Nettie on April 6, 2014; son Royce; parents Michael and Marjorie Melnick; brothers Steve (Marie), John, Harry, and sisters Lena (Charlie) Peterson and Polly Smith. The second youngest of eight children, Dan was born in Whitemouth, MB on September 27, 1925. He and his brothers managed to find all kinds of trouble growing up on the farm. His working career began in the 1940s with his brother, Tom operating the Melnick's Garage and GM dealership in Whitemouth for 40 years. During these years the business diversified to include a bus line and taxi service. Wanting a change, Dan took over the buses and taxi and ran it until his retirement. Dan loved to travel and meet people from all walks of life. The bus line and taxi gave him that. Dan had such an easy going manner that getting to know people on these trips made him feel like he wasn't really working. The real work was in the maintenance! After moving to Gimli, Dan's favourite pastimes were sitting on the deck in the summer watching everyone in the pool in Aspen Park or having the garage door open, sitting on his walker watching the neighbourhood activity, waiting for someone to pass by and stop for a chat. He loved his little trips to the Gimli airstrip to watch the planes take off and land. He and Nettie also loved looking after their great-grandchildren after school. What a lucky pair they were, having had the health and time to spend with their great-grandchildren! And how blessed we all were to have had Dad and Mom as long as we did. In keeping with Dan's wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association http://www.mb.lung.ca/index.php or to Selkirk Betel Home Foundation, 212 Manchester Ave., Selkirk, MB R1A 0B6.
