JOSEPH PETER CARLSON With deep sorrow we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, papa, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and good friend Joe Carlson on May 24, 2013. Joe was born January 22, 1940 in Berens River, MB. Joe was predeceased by his parents Kathleen (nee Spurrill) and Ingemar; mother and father-in-law Esther (nee Mowat) and Russell Whiteway; daughter Anita; brothers Dave, Jack, and Bernard. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 43 years Edie, daughter and son-in-law Cyndi (Pat) Devaney; grandSON) Michael; sisters Edna, Allie, Vernie and Millie; sisters and brothers-in-law Elva and Dianne, Ronnie (Kathy), Robert (Virginia), Melvin (Carol), Bonnie (William), and Connie (Brent); grandchildren Brett, Shaelyn, Colton, Korey, Chicago, Trinity and Shanika, numerous nieces and nephews. Joe lived and worked around many lakes over his lifetime. He spent a few years guiding and managing Ball Lake Resort, ON and Great Bear Lake (Plumbers Lodge) N.W.T. In 1971 the opportunity arose for him to return back home to Matheson Island to be closer to his young family and become a commercial fisher for the past 43 years. He was also an avid trapper on Flour Lake and Pigeon River trap-line. Soon after his daughter and son-in-law moved to the Island, Pat joined him on the trap-line. Over the past few years Edie was his trapping partner when Pat was unable to go with him. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Joe's life will be held at Matheson Island Community Hall at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014. Interment will take place at a later date. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Just found out that a great guy (Joe Carlson) I worked with at Barney Lambs Ball Lake Lodge, ON and at Plummers Great Bear Lake Lodge, NWT.. died. I was a kid away from home and Joe made things go easy for me. Joe looked out for me. I looked for Joe for many years...obviously I didn't look hard enough. Joe was a neat guy...Joe was a "nice guy" and there was nothing I wouldn't have done for him! He was our Foreman and we all liked him very much. Never saw Joe get mad or yell at anyone...wasn't in his nature. I looked up to him...he cared about people. He was my friend and I am sorry I never got the chance to see him again. To Joe's family from my heart to yours...I am so very sad to hear this news and please know that you and Joe will be in my thoughts. I loved this man. - Posted by: Don Rose (Friend) on: May 28, 2014
