KATIE RUSSELL Passed on May 22, 2014, our darling Katie, at age 22, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. All who knew her admired her upbeat, outgoing, and tenacious personality. Katie was interested in everyone's story, treating each and every person as an equal. Katie enjoyed travelling to many destinations, but by far spent most of her time in Newfoundland. She loved spending time with her big brother Kyle, where they enjoyed visiting family, and the whales and the puffins. As a youth she also attended numerous summer Kidney Camps in Ontario (in conjunction with Winnipeg Children's Hospital), where she made many enduring friendships. However her most recent trip was that of a life time to Ireland, where Fab set up the most romantic proposal on the Cliffs of Moher. Katie was a university education student working in inner city programs between semesters. Her hobbies included camping, rock climbing, art and reading. She was also die hard Saskatchewan Roughrider fan! However her singular passion, was to train her golden retriever Charley as a therapy dog. Leaving with wonderful memories are her parents Bill and Debbie, brother Kyle, and her beloved fiancée Fab. She will also be missed by cherished aunts, uncles, cousins, many family, friends, as well as her closest friends Jennilee, Jaeden and Kirstyn. The medical support of Doctors Ralph Wong, Lisa Miller and Joel Gingerich along with their staff and close friend Bonnie Persowich was greatly appreciated. At Katie's request "A celebration of life" will take place on Monday, June 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Norwood Community Centre, 87 Walmer St., Winnipeg. Katie also requested everyone come dressed in jeans or whatever is comfy. In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established to place a memorial bench at Maple Grove Dog Park where Katie spent endless hours with her very best friend, Charley. These donations may be made at any CIBC in Canada to account 32237/7032935 for Katie and Charley's Memory Bench'. Please note: the account number is mandatory in order to make the deposit. It was a cold night in December 2003. I had recently moved to Woodydell and was feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the unpacking as well as the mountains of homework from the course at Red River College. My husband had passed away in April and I was feeling pretty lonely. There was a knock at the door. When I opened the door, standing there was a blond haired, smiling woman and a dark haired, sparkling eyed, big smiling little girl. Twelve year old Katie had wanted to bring a gift to me to welcome me to the neighbourhood. So typically Katie. And so began our never ending friendship and mutual love of the Riders. Blessings, love and big hugs. - Posted by: Jacqueline Crowther (Friend and buddy Rider fan) on: Jul 17, 2014

She was a sweet girl that would always be so excited to visit and see my dog Sam. it's always make me smile to see her so happy to be able to visit my dog. A happy sweet soul who loved all animals. her presence will be missed. - Posted by: Debra and Rick Vandekerkhove (neighbor to her friend) on: Jun 18, 2014

I remember meeting Katie and her dad in the Children's clinic and being struck by Katie's beautiful smile and disposition. Katie just oozed genuine warmth and caring. Over the years we saw Katie grow up to become a lovely young lady who tackled everything in her life with passion and zest. I also enjoyed meeting the family spontaneously while camping at Rushing River and sharing a drink. - Posted by: Garry Epp (Nurse at Children's Hospital) on: Jun 02, 2014

When I first met Katie she was smiling, and that smile was very warm said a lot about her, she was a very happy loving person I was so blessed to have had Katie in my life. Go, rest and smile on us from the spot you have in the sky with the other angels. - Posted by: Angela Dupuis (Friend old co worker) on: May 29, 2014

I didn't know Katie all that well, but when I was around her, she gave off this energy that made anyone feel accepted. The world has lost a beautiful person, and I would be honored to keep her memory strong and true by making a donation. - Posted by: Tavia (Aquainence) on: May 28, 2014

My deepest condolences to the many friends and family members of Katie. She used to be a good friend of mine in junior high, and I was shocked to have learned what this poor girl had to go through. I admire how she handled everything with the utmost strength and courage. I remember a time when I was rather down and she would say "Don't be so upset- you'll make yourself sick" and then she'd try to cheer me up and I'd forget all about it. She was never one to bring her issues up to anyone but she would always be there to help someone else with theirs. I've shared alot of happy moments with her, and even though it was so long ago, I will never forget those moments, and I will think of her always. Rest well, Katie. May your wild spirit live on through those you've left behind. - Posted by: Jennifer () on: May 28, 2014

My condolences to Debbie, Bill, and Kyle. Katie was such a wonderful young lady. I admired how she lived her life...passionately, positively, and lovingly. Katie was good friends with my daughter Kyla and there were numerous events that always ended up with ridiculous pictures and tons of laughter. I am so lucky to have shared some moments with Katie. - Posted by: Donna Boiteau () on: May 28, 2014
