DOROTHY GORAY (nee KOROL) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Dorothy Goray, at the Grace Hospital on June 11, 2014, at the age of 79. Dorothy (meaning God's gift) is survived by her seven children; Shirley, Susie (Bruce) Shearer, Dan (Heidi), Debbie, Sandra (Kerry) Sampson, David, Thomas (Marsha); grand-children, Jordan and Phillip; Lisa, David and Thomas; Caley and Sara; Tyler, Terrence and Taylor; and Devan and Stephanie; great-grandchildren, Michael and Casey; sister Mary Pachkowski; brother Steve (Luba) Korol; sisters-in-law, Harris Korol and Cathy Korol; as well as many nieces, nephews, neighbours, friends and her two beloved pugs, Puggy and Billy. She was predeceased by her loving husband John in 1997; brothers, Bill (Anne) Moroz, Matt (Ethel) Korol, Andy (Elsie) Korol, Fred Korol, Mike Korol; brother-in-law, Russ Pachkowski; nephews, Mike Pachkowski and Fred Moroz; niece, Eva Korol and son-in-law, Fayez Hakeem. Dorothy was born in the Ukrainian farming community of Mink Creek, Manitoba on March 17, 1935 to Maxim and Julia (Moroz) Korol. She married John Goray and together they raised their seven children in the Rhodes area and in 1972 moved with their family to Winnipeg. Life on the farm in the 50's and 60's was challenging and labour intensive. Dorothy and John tilled the land, planted wheat and other grains, raised cattle, pigs and chickens without the modern conveniences we now take for granted. This tiny, remarkable woman, a devoted wife and mother, was a tower of strength, a powerhouse of energy, efficient, organized, diligent and hard working and taught her children the values of hard work, humility, resilience and family. Dorothy was an avid gardener and greatly enjoyed tending to her gardens, both on the farm in Rhodes and in Winnipeg. She also enjoyed her daily walks in all weather conditions - sun, rain, fog, snow and bitter cold, often logging several miles a day. Once her children and grandchildren were grown, her passion turned towards rescuing animals, especially those who were abused, mistreated or abandoned. Over the course of 25 years, she fed and nurtured countless abandoned cats and kittens, ensuring that, when there was no hope for survival of any one of these vulnerable creatures, they were brought to rescue animal shelters rather than left to wander the streets. She also had an enormous collection of stuffed teddy bears and other stuffed animals. She donated numerous bags of these toys to both the Children's Hospital and to needy children in the Philippines. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 16, 2014 at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Don McIntyre officiating. Interment to follow at Brookside Cemetery. Reception will be held following the interment at Cropo Funeral Chapel. Pallbearers will be Dan, David and Thomas Goray, Kerry, Tyler and Terrence Sampson. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dorothy may be made to Cat Tails Rescue Inc., c/o Machray Animal Hospital, 1039 McPhillips Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2X 2K6. Arrangements entrusted to: CROPO FUNERAL HOME 1442 Main Street Winnipeg, Manitoba 204-586-8044

  • I'm so sad to see this. I did not know that she had passed away until about a year ago. I wasn't biologically one of her grandchildren but she always made me feel welcome at her home. We'd share a lot of butterscotch ice cream in her backyard when I'd visit with my dad and Shirley from Toronto. She was one of my most favorite people to talk to. I remember once when I was 5 in 1983. She took me to the grocery store, and I ended up going # 2 in my pants. She was so mad, that she had to clean me in the women's restroom and throw my underwear in the trash. I do remember her laughing at me on the way home. My last memories of her was when she came to Toronto with Debbie to visit and I was 15. I remember always hugging her and kissing her on the cheek every morning and she'd always laugh at how affectionate I was. To all the Goray's you have deepest condolences, I really loved her like she was my grandmother, and I always have fond memories of being loved in your family. I hope all is well and I truly wish you all the best! Much Love Patrick (JoJo) - Posted by: Patrick (Jojo) Hakeem (Step-Grandson) on: Feb 07, 2018

  • I had to correct the entry I posted back on June 14. It was Sandy that was my age, not Susie. Sandy was in my class, before she and the family moved to Winnipeg. Hope all is well, may your mom rest in peace. - Posted by: Bradley Pisiak (neighbours long ago) on: Jul 13, 2014

  • We will truly miss you Aunty Dorothy, or as I grew up knowing you, Tsyotsya Dokia. I will forever charish so many fond memories of growing up across the road from you, Uncle John and all the cousins. We were always treated like one big family! You were like a second mom to me. When you moved to Winnipeg it was very difficult to get used to but always such a pleasure to go into the city for a visit, and an honour to have my family get to know you as well. May you rest in peace. Shirley, Susie, Danny, Debbie, Sandy, Dave and Tom: you have truly lost a special person and our heartfelt sympathy goes out to you and your families. • My condolences to the family of Mrs. Goray. My first years as a child my family lived on a farm in the foothills of the Duck Mountains just north of Mink Creek, an area called Rhodes (about 10 miles west of the village of Ethelbert). The Gorays were our farm neighbours, about 1/2 mile down the gravel road. I recall a big house being slowly transported down the road, to their farm yard, to become their new home. We would walk or cycle down the road to visit and play. I remember Mrs. Goray making us some fresh buttered toast! We all went to school in Ethelbert and caught the school bus to do so. Susie was my age, in my class. My family then moved (10 miles) into town, I remember it had to be the summer of 1971 because that fall, from grade 2 and on, I was now walking distance from school. Our farm neighbours moved much further away, to the big city of Winnipeg. It's four decades later and we've since all move away now, my Mom moved to nearby Dauphin, and we like to go back now and then to what we call "God's country"! It seems like a very long time ago, but I have memories of them being very good neighbours and friends. Rest in peace Mrs. Goray. - Posted by: Bradley Pisiak (neighbours long ago) on: Jun 14, 2014
