DONALD BRUCE MACLEOD
Date of Passing: Jun 22, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD BRUCE MACLEOD January 31, 1952 June 22, 2014 On June 22, 2014, far too soon, but peacefully at home, Don passed away at the age of 62 after a tough battle with lung cancer. He had his special girls by his side: Arlene, his wife of 33 years, and the light of his life, his daughter Kira. He is also survived by his son-in-law Shawn Beaudry; his brothers: Ken of Victoria, BC, and Gavin (Carolyn) of Etobicok, ON; his sister Carol of Edmonton, AB; his in-laws: Gerry and Doug Raynard of Anola, MB; and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was born in Calgary, AB, but was raised in the Fort Rouge area of Winnipeg. At the tender age of 18 he began his life long career with Manitoba Hydro. That's also where and when he met his wife-to-be. Don joined the Electrical Journeyman program and later specialized as a Valve Technician. He spent eight years in Gillam, MB, and in 1987 transferred to Dorsey Station where he continued to work until his retirement in 2007, after 37 years of service. Don was a quiet guy who was known for his strong work ethic, attention to detail and generous, caring heart. He was always willing to lend a hand and had the perfect tool (in pristine condition) for every job. His greatest joy was watching Kira perform or compete; whether it was basketball, volleyball or dance. He loved to see her "in action" and never missed an event, if he could help it. He was very proud of her accomplishments in her activities as well as being voted Valedictorian, graduating from Mechanical Engineering, becoming an Orthotist and marrying a great guy. In spite of a heart attack two days before, Don summoned the strength and courage to walk his "Miss K" down the aisle on May 10, 2014. Don accepted his terminal diagnosis with grace and courage. He remained patient and strong, and always maintained his sense of humour. He was very grateful for his "entourage" of care givers: Arlene, Kira and Shawn, and made sure to let them know how lucky he felt to have the support that he did. A celebration of Don's life will be held on Wednesday, July 2 at 7:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. We would like to thank friends and family for their support. A special thanks to Gary and Lorraine Beaudry for their support of the intimate and timely wedding for Kira and Shawn a lot to handle having both of your children married within six weeks. A huge thank you to Dr. Roland Hayward for going above and beyond for his patients, and thanks to the WRHA Palliative Care Team for supporting us in keeping Don comfortable at home. Flowers are gratefully declined. He was a wonderful brother, father and husband. I remember in our family there were not hardly any relatives that we knew or ever saw. Don learned to love being part of Arlene's extended family. There were three older ladies {The Dollies} that he would pick up and bring to their home for meals at Thanksgiving and at Christmas. One was Arlene's aunt another a relative and the third a great friend of the family. This was something he learned to enjoy. He was kind and helpful, a bit laid back which was wonderful for the dogs he and Arlene fostered until someone would adopt them. One was a stray dog matted beyond belief running around St. Boniface for a couple of years until he and Arlene finally, with some help, caught him. I miss Donald Bruce MacLeod so very much as does his wife, daughter and family. Keeper had a very hard time to feel comfortable with other dogs and people. He was over protective of his blanket. Don, Arlene and Kira his favourite daughter did everything they could to calm him. So far he is still a "keeper". He liked to a good job on everything he touched and would not rest until it was done. - Posted by: Carol MacLeod (sister) on: Dec 09, 2014

Arlene, I am so sorry to hear about Don. The few times I met him, at Helen's backyard and at the Dragon Boat practises and races he seemed like a great guy. He will be missed but not forgotten. Take care Arlene, Yours Truly, Vance. - Posted by: Vance (Friend of Arlene) on: Jul 02, 2014

I would like to offer my sincere condolences to Arlene and family on the passing of Don. I worked with Don for a few years up north and at Dorsey. I remember him as a hard worker who always would lend a hand if you needed it and also had a great sense of humour. He was meticulous in everything he did and it showed. I know he will be missed and may the memories of him bring comfort to you in this trying time. - Posted by: Rick Bos (former co-worker.) on: Jul 01, 2014

We are so sorry for your loss; may your memories bring some comfort to you. Brant enjoyed the many conversations across the garden in summer or while blowing snow in the winter. I will always remember Don's gentle kindness with other neighbours knowing that we could count on that if we needed it. He will be missed. - Posted by: Cynthia & Brant (neighbours) on: Jun 24, 2014
