ANTHONY MAXWELL (MAX) GRAHAM On June 19, 2014 Max's amazing journey in life ended peacefully. Max was born in Wolseley, SK. He was predeceased by his wife, Jean and his sister Gwen. He is survived by his daughters: Linda, Judi (Jack) and Debbie (Marvin) grandchildren: Cary, Shawn, Don, Julia, Jay, Taylor, Tyson, and Tarel, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Max and his family moved from the farm in Saskatchewan to Winnipeg in 1949. This is when he started his entrepreneurial life. He owned Central Provision's, a grocery store on Sargent and Kennedy for over 20 years. During the 50s Max and life-long friend Ross MacMaster started Gra-Mac Stables in St. Boniface. The next venture was Sunshine Riding Academy in St. James. He then was a pioneer in the PMU business. He operated that for over 45 years. During this time he also ran the local animal shelter for 20 years. His last business and the one that he retired from at the age of 86 was Graham's Pony Rides. Max also was a lifetime member of Khartum Shriners in the Arabian Horse Guard unit. Over the years most of Max's family and friends at some point worked for Dad, Pa, Papa, Uncle Max or Mackey. Whether it was selling groceries, guiding rides, cleaning stalls, dumping jugs or leading ponies, there were usually a lot of laughs. Max enjoyed life. With a twinkle in his eye he loved telling a story and hearing yours. He was very curious about other people and interested in their lives. He was always ready to help anyone who asked. Max loved making a "deal" and never sold a horse that wasn't 8 or 9! Relaxation for Max was a quick trip back to Wolseley to visit his cousins Tommy and Graham. There was always a horse or two traded back and forth. Many a time he would say "Pack up - let's go to Wolseley" and off we would go, sometimes within the hour! We miss you Dad but you leave behind a lifetime of memories that will live on in your children, grandchildren and great-grand-children. The family would like to say a special thank you to Len Turcot, Charlie Castelein and Tom Humniski for their friendship to Dad. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Max's life will be held Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Croatian Community Centre, 22 Skazyk Rd. (just off Donald Rd.) in St. Andrews, MB. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Dad's name to Manitoba Cancer Care. Cropo Funeral Chapel 204-586-8044

  • Max was an incredible man, my fondest memories were those of him with the pony rides at every fair, and just to have a great laugh and always listened to what ever you had to say. It was always a pleasure to run into you and just chat. Rest peacefully my friend. - Posted by: Jessie (friend of family) on: Jul 07, 2014

  • Rest well Max, thank you for the "Sunshine" days, without you there to give myself and so many others a worthwhile "first job" who knows how we would have ended up. You left happy memories for me and I will always smile when I think of you. - Posted by: Jodi Radul (friend) on: Jul 02, 2014

  • I have many childhood memories of Max and Jean's farm when visiting with my parents John and Kathleen Mills..I distinctly remember Max and Linda trying to convince me that there was nothing to be afraid of being on a horse but I could never be convinced..Although I think I remember trying to convince Max he could give me one of his many ponies and I would look after it..Thank you Max for some very happy memories! To Linda,Judi and the extended families I send my condolences. - Posted by: Lisa Mills -Baker () on: Jul 02, 2014

  • Our sincerest condolences for the loss of a special person in your family. I remember a time when I briefly guided for Max, long ago. When our family visited Jean and Max at their farm it was a good time, I banked many fantastic childhood memories. Linda, Judy and families, please know I am thinking of you today and I hope the coming days are full of laughs, tears and an abundance of great memories. I will share some with my family who never had the opportunity to meet Max. Fondest regards. • New Max as a kid when my Dad would take us riding at Sunshine Academy. Max was always a very nice man and always was smiling and a very cheerful person. Later on in life Max and I would cross paths once again, this time we would work together. Max would bring his pony ring to work with us on our local carnival show in Winnipeg and throughout the Province. Max would also let us store our rides and trailers at his farmer in between fairs. Max was a very kind and gentle man who never had a bad thing to say about anybody. But his true passion was his horses and his family. Take care my friend you will be surely missed by all. - Posted by: timothy buzunis (friend) on: Jun 28, 2014
