GILBERT CARROTHERS WILTON 1918 - 2014 Passed away following a long illness on June 30, 2014, with his wife Alice by his side. Gilbert and Alice have lived in Fort Garry for over 60 years, where they raised two sons, Greg and Ray, who both sadly passed away in 2001. Gilbert will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 72 years, Alice (nee Abernethy), his daughter-in-law, Donna, his grandchildren, Shauna, Diana and Megan, and great-granddaughter, Kate. He was very grateful to his nieces and nephews, particularly Allan and Rita Barker and Tracy Morrow, family friend Marion Widlake, and cousin Libby MacTavish, for their generous help and care over the past several years. Gilbert was born in the town of Glenboro, MB on October 20, 1918 and moved to Winnipeg with his wife, Alice in 1948. Shortly afterwards, he began working for Winnipeg Transit as a tram driver. He continued working with Winnipeg Transit in many roles, finally retiring as a supervisor in 1983. Vacations at Gilbert and Alice's retreat at Spruce Woods in summers and trips down to Westlaco, TX for many winters were highlights for Gilbert and Alice. Together they enjoyed playing golf, entertaining their many friends, games of Scrabble and crib, a good discussion, and especially spending time with family. A memorial service will take place on Friday, July 4, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Road, followed by a reception for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 1160-675 McDermot Avenue Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, or donate@cancercare.mb.ca.
