Date of Passing: Jul 13, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPEARL HEROUX (nee HANSLIP) Peacefully after a short illness, with her family at her side, Mom passed away Sunday, July 13, 2014 at the Eriksdale Personal Care Home. Mom was born on the family homestead west of Eriksdale near Starr Lake on January 1, 1923 to John and Mabel Hanslip. She attended Eriksdale School and had fond memories of all the ribbons won in track and field. Mom married Dad on February 24, 1945. They settled in Eriksdale and raised three children. She is survived by her children Gail (Winston), Brenda (Andy) and Ron (Jean); eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; her siblings Lil Casselman and John Hanslip, along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in 1987 by her husband Lyman, also her sisters Lottie, Elva and Marg. Mom loved her community and was involved in numerous organizations and committees. Mom really enjoyed her many drives around the country with her sisters, bus tours, fiddle festivals and old time dances. She was still dancing at the beginning of this year. She worked at various jobs until they bought the Blue Grass Inn in 1961 where she remained until retirement in 2008. She was a people person who really enjoyed working with the public. She moved into the Eriksdale Personal Care Home in 2013. Mom was very thankful, which leads us to do something Mom would have wanted to do herself, which is thanking each and every individual who gave her support since Dad passed away. A sincere thanks to the Eriksdale Personal Care Home, her doctors and home care staff for the compassionate care shown to her and our family. A celebration of Mom's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 18, 2014 at the Eriksdale Recreation Centre with Pastor Bill Watson officiating. Interment of her cremains will take place in the Eriksdale Municipal Cemetery following the service with a lunch to be held in the hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the E. M. Crowe Memorial Hospital Guild, c/o Irene Sigurdson, P.O. Box 474, Eriksdale, MB R0C 0W0 or to a charity of one's choice. I' m sure I speak for all the Surgenor kids in remembering the "10 cent things" with Aunty Pearl. Never fail, every Christmas Day Aunty Pearl and Uncle Lyman would sled over to the Surgenor house on the big yellow SKI-DOO, loaded with FULL boxes of revels and fudgecicles. I think it was Cal that labeled them the 10 cent things; that's how much they were to buy in the cafe. Of course a sip or 2 of whiskey for Mom & Dad. Very fond memories of the good times spent at the Blue Grass Inn, eating lemon pie and drinking a "coke float". Ah, those were the days. Also, when Dad lost his eyesight, he still managed to walk on down to the cafe where Aunty Pearl would have a cup of tea waiting for him. My condolences to Ron, Brenda, Gail and their families. Sorry I had to miss the celebration of Pearl's life (I'm in BC right now). She was a wonderful lady and we all loved her. - Posted by: Elaine Lawson (Surgenor) (Family friend) on: Jul 18, 2014

"Auntie" Pearl was a close friend of my Grandma so when us grandchildren would visit Grandma in Eriksdale, we always would go for a walk to the restaurant down the street. Auntie Pearl always made sure she gave us kids candy and sent us on our way with some to bring home! Although I have not seen her in many many years, I have very fond memories of her! You will be missed Auntie Pearl. Say Hi to Grandpa and Grandma Surgenor for us! - Posted by: Meagan Ritchie () on: Jul 18, 2014

I remember the French fries at the Blue Grass Inn were the best. When I was a younger person, which is a while back, she would sell us 10 or 15 cents worth of fries. If the bottle picking around town was really good, you could get 25 cents worth and really fill up. A very nice lady. RIP Pearl. Condolences to the family... - Posted by: Garry Lindell () on: Jul 17, 2014

Pearl was such a lady in every sense. I have such fond memories of Pearl back in the days of high school, eating fries and ketchup and her famous hamburger soup. She was always so good to us and always had a smile for everyone. My Mom had such a good friend in Pearl and they spent every morning and afternoon together at the restaurant for many years. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time of mourning. May all the wonderful memories of such a wonderful person carry you through this. - Posted by: Gail Sanduliak (Friend) on: Jul 16, 2014
