FEDOR IWANUS Peacefully Fedor Iwanus, at the age of 90, passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at St. Boniface Hospital. Fedor is survived by his son Jaroslaw (Jerry); Jerry's wife, Michele; granddaughter, Jillian; sister-in-law, Olga Iwanus-Koblanska; nephews and nieces and their families in Ukraine. He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Anna; one sister, Maria; two brothers, Jaroslaw and Wasyl in Ukraine, and special friend, Olga Kuzenko. Fedor was born September 12, 1923 in Krynycia, Mykolajiwskyj RN, Lvivska oblast, Western Ukraine. His life as a child in Ukraine was extremely stressful because that area was always under occupation by Austria, Germany, Russia or Poland. Fedor left home at the tender age of 12 and became a worker on a farm from spring of 1934 until September 1939 when the war broke out. Rather than go to Russia, on January 7, 1940 Fedor went to Western Poland which was under German occupation. He only returned to his parents' farm in Ukraine twice to help them out. Since he did not return back to his workplace in Poland, the German Gestapo found and arrested him on January 6, 1944. From this time on until his release in 1945 by the United States military, Fedor was a prisoner working as a slave labourer in Poland and Germany. Even after his release in 1945, Fedor lived in many displacement camps. It was during this time that Fedor learned his mechanics trade. In July 1954, Fedor emigrated from England to Canada with his wife of two years, Anna. In 1959, their son, Jerry was born. Fedor worked as a mechanic in Canada until his retirement in 1988. Fedor was extremely proud of his Ukrainian heritage and was a proud Canadian. He spent more than 50 years volunteering in the Ukrainian community and was an active member in the Institute Prosvita. His many accomplishments included the reorganization of the Ukrainian Evening School as well as being the Administrator and Chairman of Finances from 1967 to 1973. Fedor also organized the Ukrainian Youth Association (SUM) Mandolin Orchestra and was also their Administrator and Chairman from 1968 to 1974. Fedor started Institute Prosvita's Ukrainian Museum of Archives, spending endless hours organizing their library by re-registering over 5,000 books. In 1991, during Prosvita's 75th Anniversary Celebration, Fedor volunteered countless hours recording books and documents in all departments and sent many books to Ukraine. Fedor will be sadly missed by Olga Kuzenko's daughter, Marika Barchuk; her partner, Ruffus Kennedy; Dennis Forbes; friends and neighbours. Heartfelt thanks are extended to the W.R.H.A. Palliative Care nurses and home care. A special thank you to Jennifer Ferris, Fedor's primary Palliative Care nurse, St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit, Dr. Paul Daeninck and his nurse Tracy Chornopyski. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 9:30 a.m., Saturday, July 26 (today) at St. Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church. 160 Euclid Ave. with Fr. L. Ratushniak, C.Ss.R. officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in Fedor's memory may be made to Aid for Ukraine (Pomich Ukraini), Ukrainian Canadian Social Service, Manitoba Branch, 235 McGregor St., Winnipeg, MB, R2W 4W5. Heartfelt condolences to Jerry and family, to Marika and Ruffus for the loss of your father and friend. Fedor (or as everyone called him Fred) was always outside in his yard and I will miss seeing him puttering in the yard. I remember as a child when I played the mandolin and how he used to always fix my mandolin strings as I was forever breaking them, never once complaining and always a smile on his face. He was also a driver one year when we went out for Kolyada and enjoyed not just being the driver but singing with us too. You could always find Fedor and Anna in the same pew on the right side of the church at BVM always looking very dapper! He had very kind eyes and such a mischevious smile. Rest in peace Fred, your spirit will live on and you will be missed by your friends, family and neighbours. Vichnaya Pamyat - Posted by: Marusia Kielbasowycz (Neighbor) on: Jul 26, 2014
