CHARLES (CHUCK) L. LUMSDEN
Born: Aug 23, 1937
Date of Passing: Jul 22, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCHARLES (CHUCK) L. LUMSDEN Suddenly on July 22, 2014, Charles (Chuck) Lumsden passed away at the E. M. Crowe Memorial Hospital in Eriksdale, MB. Beloved husband of Carolyn (Lyn), father of Lockhart (Cooki) and Tracey (Alex) Phillips, granddaughter Selene (Chris) Marsh, step-granddaughter Amara Leclair, great-granddaughter Lucy Marsh, sisters Annabel Crasweller of Regina SK, Enid (Ted) Baker of Oliver, BC, sisters-in-law Kay Seidler and Brenda (Wayne) Portice, brothers-in-law Brian (Hannah) Bathgate and Earl Seidler along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Norman and Claribel Lumsden of Regina, SK sisters and brothers-in-law Norma and Cliff Hardy of Victoria, BC, Elaine and Len Ashby of Kamloops, BC, Ches Baker of Elmvale, ON, and Norman Crassweller of Regina, SK. He was born on August 23, 1937 in Outlook, SK, the youngest child and only son. He always claimed to be picked on but it was obvious they all doted on him and spoiled him. After his schooling in Regina, SK he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served on both coasts for 15 years. He worked for the HBC (Northern Stores) and also joined the Fort Garry Horse reserves where he achieved the rank of Captain. Later he worked for and retired from Transport Canada. For many years he sailed Lake Winnipeg aboard the Jalang, planting daisies at every stop. After retirement he moved to Clarkleigh and rebuilt a lovely old farmhouse with the help of family and friends amid much fun and laughter. The last 10 winters were spent in Arizona where he made silver jewelry for all the ladies, family and friends. From his grandson-in-law Chris Marsh, "He was an honourable man, even a father figure for myself, rich with character, respect and intelligence. I'm glad to have met him and he will live all through our family to Lucy." Our deepest thanks to Dr. Burnet and the very kind staff at the E. M. Crowe Hospital in Eriksdale. They were so very understanding of the difficulties Chuck was having and were so gentle and kind with him. They gave us so much support when he passed away. We are so grateful to them all. Chuck has been cremated by Arnason Funeral Home of Lundar and will be buried in Dilke, SK at a later date. The family will be holding a memorial wake at home in Clarkleigh on Saturday afternoon, July 26, 2014. All family and friends are invited to drop in. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the E. M. Crowe Memorial Hospital Guild - c/o Irene Sigurdson, Box 474, Eriksdale, MB R0C 0W0. Hi Everybody, We're sorry we can't be in Clarkleigh for Chuck's Wake as we are on our way home from Ontario from visiting Bill and family. Cory and family along with Bill and his family and Russ and I send along our sincerest condolences on Chuck's Passing. We are all shocked that he has passed. We sure will miss him. We'll miss his funny sayings such as: Gagging the Lollies, Dumb, Fat and Happy, I wonder what the poor people are doing -- this was a favourite, when we were sailing and in Arizona... His one-liners made people laugh. This man was funny, witty, clever and could repair almost anything. Bill and Cory used to call him 'McGivor" after an 80's TV show where the star could repair and make almost anything for the plot line. Into retirement, Chuck and Lyn were able to enjoy Arizona for the winters. Chuck so looked forward to this that he often talked about plans for Arizona a lot of the time while they were back home here in Manitoba for the summers. Chuck made some wonderful sterling jewelry in his jewelry classes that he taught while in Arizona. I have numerous lovely pieces of jewelry from Chuck that I cherish. We have had lots of fun with Chuck and Lyn. A wonderful charter sailing trip in Florida, 30 years of Russ and Chuck being good sailing buddies, many visits in both Arizona and at home here. We have made a ton of memories during our long friendship. Chuck has added to our lives by being a good, steady friend. He was a good man who we loved. We'll miss him something fierce. Rest In Peace Chucky We Love You Russ and Shelley and Family - Posted by: Russ and Shelley (Friends) on: Jul 27, 2014

We met Chuck when we moved to Clarkleigh and became neighbors & friends. As our house was very old Chuck was called upon numerous times for his expertise. He was always willing to help or give advice and in doing so would provide endless hours of entertainment via his wit, stories and antidotes. Chuck taught us a lot over the years and we truly appreciated and respected him. Our sincere condolences to Lyn, Cooki, Tracey and all of Chuck's family. - Posted by: Frank Minaker/Petra Reimann (Neighbours) on: Jul 26, 2014

Cooki and family my sympathies. Chuck was a great soldier and one of a small group that made it to a senior NCO rank (in his case a Master Warrant Officer) and then commissioned. I always got along with him and we had many great times in the mess. May he rest in peace. Facta non Verba. - Posted by: Barbara (Gillis) McManus (fellow Garry) on: Jul 25, 2014

I have several pieces of jewelry that Chuck made for me. I will treasure them always. Chuck was a great guy, he would always make coffee for the group of gals I traveled with and always had a bottle of wine cooled. He was always ready for Lynn to go with us on our trips and he would enjoy eating frozen dinners while we were gone. He will be missed by his many friends here. - Posted by: Carol Reed (Friend) on: Jul 25, 2014

Tall and handsome, Uncle Chuck was my mother's baby brother and my cousin Lockhart and Tracey's dad. His sternness was always peppered with deep affection and kindness. I always, always knew he loved all of us, and when he was with us we were very very safe. I have such fond memories of the time I spent at Uncle Chuck and Aunt Lynn's. Tall grass and Daisies, sun filled days and soda pop. You are deeply imbedded in my heart sweet Uncle Chuck. In that way you live on.... - Posted by: Maxyne Baker (Niece) on: Jul 25, 2014

I learned a lot about who I wanted to be by spending time with Granny and Grumpy, hanging out at their home and spending summers at the harbour in Gimli. Grumpy encouraged me no matter what, if I'm going to do something to do it well and be proud of my accomplishments who I am. My favorite memory is when Grumpy helped me make a home made light bulb for my science project. I was so proud to go to his work to spend the day with him and learn. It was the first time I learned to love school and did really well in science. I have always felt a part of the family and loved Grumpy was one of the best people I ever knew. - Posted by: Amar Leclair (Step-granddaughter ) on: Jul 25, 2014

I grew up with Tracey and Lockie in Winnipeg in the 70's. To this day Tracey is still one of my dearest and loving friends. I spent a lot of time at the Lumsden household growing up from ages 10 to 20! They were my 2nd family. I remember a family dinner that I was invited to..and an older relative or acquaintance of the family was at this dinner. I was unaware - but apparently this relative did not want to sit at the same dinner table as me because of my ethnic background. I am Filipino. Mr. Lumsden took a stand and told him that I was a guest in his house and if he didn't want to sit at the dinner table he could leave. Thank you Mr. Lumsden (I still can't call him Chuck!). Rest in peace...you will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered. My love and condolences to you Carolyn, Lockie and Tracey. Though it has been some years since I saw Chuck he will always be remembered for his quick intelligence and perceptive wit. Even if I was just passing through on a mission with Cooki, Chuck would bring out a laugh and a smile. He was a man of real integrity and character and someone you knew you could trust. My heart goes out to all of his family, especially Carolyn, Cooki and Tracey. Godspeed Chuck. - Posted by: Kevin Wallbridge (friend) on: Jul 25, 2014
