INA MAE FICKES Ina Mae Fickes, 79, of Winnipeg, passed away peacefully at Grace Hospice, after a brief illness. Ina was born November 20, 1934, in Melville Saskatchewan, to Rudolph and Marjorie Bolme. Growing up in the 1930s on the Prairies was not an easy task, and the family had to adjust to many challenges, from farming, to running a grain elevator, and several ventures in sales. But the hardships taught Ina many lessons she carried forward in life. The family grew 11 years later with the arrival of Ina's sister Gay. Ina showed a keen mind early on, graduating from school at age 16. She immediately started her career in education, first in the North of Saskatchewan, before moving to Winnipeg. Here, she developed her skills as a Special Needs and Assessment teacher, and many children benefited from her caring hand and guidance as she steered them to get the support and assistance they needed to succeed, both in education and life. Her career concluded with retirement from the Winnipeg School Division in 1999. Besides Ina's love for her work with children, she also had a love for music. She was an accomplished pianist having completed her Grade X piano by the age of 15 years. As well, she directed many choirs, and performed in public sharing her beautiful, soulful voice. Upon moving to Winnipeg, she met Earl Fickes, and their marriage lasted nearly 48 years before he passed away in 2013. Together, they raised a son, Richard. Ina is survived by her sister, Gay McKinnon (and her husband Don), her son Richard, his wife Andrea, and their daughter, Ina's beloved granddaughter Jayme. As per her wishes, there will be no formal gathering. Ina will be interred after cremation in the same urn as her husband, ensconced in the Serenity Room at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. Donations in her name will be gratefully accepted by CancerCare Manitoba. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • So sorry to read of your Mom's passing, Richard. During my visits to your parents' home as your Dad's primary nurse I also got to know Ina fairly well; she was such a lovely, intelligent and friendly person. I'm glad I had the chance to get to know both Earl and Ina, and they remain to this day very special people to me. I know you will miss them terribly and my sincere condolences go out to you. - Posted by: Marianne Niesink (Visiting nurse, Palliative Care program) on: Aug 10, 2014

  • I'm sorry to see that you've lost both your parents now, Richard. My Dad passed at the end of June. I guess we're at that age now. Wishing you many fond memories to help you through this time of loss. - Posted by: Susan Turner (nee Ripley) (School Friend) on: Aug 03, 2014
