MICHAEL KREWIAK February 12, 1922 - August 13, 2014 With family at his side, Mike passed away peacefully at Selkirk General Hospital on August 13, 2014. Mike was predeceased by his wife, Elma; sister Cecilia, and brothers John, Steve, and Hank (Dorothy). He is survived by his sister Fran (Ed); sons Michael (Terri) and Ron; daughter Michelle (Lorne); grandchildren Jacki (Leo), Michael, Jennifer (Joe), Alexandra and Max and great-grandchildren Amy, Sam, and Ella. Mike was born and raised in East Selkirk. When the Second World War broke out, Mike volunteered and was sent to the Lake Superior Regiment in what is now Thunder Bay. In July of 1944 Mike's regiment landed in Normandy as part of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division and, along with other Canadian divisions, helped to liberate north-west Europe. Mike's journey with the Canadian army in Europe ended in Holland. He and his carrier group were wounded by mortars near Wouwse Hill on October 26, 1944. Mike lost his leg as a result of these injuries but eventually recovered and returned to Selkirk after the war. He married Elma Gunter of Selkirk. Except for a short time in Toronto, Mike and Elma lived their entire lives in Selkirk. Mike was a lifelong member of the ANAF, Royal Canadian Legion, and War Amps of Canada. Mike cherished his times with his family and always enjoyed the Saturday morning coffee get-togethers. He especially loved visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In accordance with Dad's wishes, cremation has taken place and a chapel service will be held at Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, MB, on Tuesday, August 19 at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be made in Mike's memory to the War Amputations of Canada. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • My wife and I wish to express our sympathy to all the Krewiak Family. My brother Bill enlisted in the Lake Superior Reg, at the same day in 1940. They were very close friends, and your Dad spent many short leaves at our parents' house, as not enough time was available to go home to Selkirk. He was part of our family. Your Dad and my brother were in the same area when he ws wounded, and told my brother to be careful, keep your head down. We enjoyed meeting your Dad and Mother at all the reunions. They were a joy to be associated with. Your Dad was a good fiend, and we will miss him. My brother and all the friends of your Dad, said he looked like a General on dress parades. You will have fond memories of a great father. Gus and Corinne Barclay - Posted by: Gus and Corinne Barclay (Long time friend of my brother Bill in the Lake Superior Reg,t) on: Aug 21, 2014
