KIRSTIN RAE SUTHERLAND July 17, 1987 September 5, 2014 On September 5, 2014, in Selkirk, Manitoba, our daughter and sister, niece, cousin and granddaughter was tragically taken from us at the age of twenty-seven. Kirstin will be always loved, celebrated and remembered by her parents, Laurie and Rick, her sisters Katie and Kelsey, her grandmother Kaye Dewar, Auntie Karen and Uncle Bob Lorenz and cousin Andrew and his sons Xavier and Nate, Uncle Gary and Auntie Heather Dewar and their daughter, cousin Camryn, Uncle Randy and Auntie Karen Dewar and their children, cousins Brent and Nicki, Uncle Greg and Auntie Kathleen and cousin Shea Dewar (Jaclynn), Auntie Allison Dewar, Great-Uncle Brian and Auntie Donna Dewar, Great-Aunt Doreen Massey, Auntie Marie and Uncle Gary McDonald and their children, cousins Justin and Janelle, and her son Nolan, Auntie Janice Sutherland and cousin Shane (Becky) Sutherland, and their children Molly and Robbie, cousin Stacey (Steve) Bent and their children Taylor and Brooklyn, and Great-Aunt Dorothy Burzuik. She will also be missed by her many close friends, and by numerous other cousins, family members, and neighbours. Kirstin was predeceased by her grandfather Lorne Sutherland in 1982, grandmother Helen Sutherland in 2005, grandfather Stewart Dewar in 2004, her Great-Aunt Betty and Uncle Ross Peel in 1990, and her Uncle Gerry Sutherland in 1989. Kirstin was like a shooting star. She burst into our lives and dazzled us with her beautiful spirit, her gorgeous smile and bright blue eyes that could light up the room. Kirstin loved her family above everything else, and she was so loved in return. She was the happiest when she was spending time with a family member or a friend. Kirstin had been inspired by her older sister, Katie, to become an administrative assistant, and had planned to start a program at Red River College in late September. She was a good big sister to Kelsey, and was so proud to see her graduate. She spent a lot of time with her Grandma Kaye; taking her for lunch and to garage sales. Kirstin loved to be part of a large extended family. Her favourite times were special occasions celebrated with familyThanksgiving Dinner, New Year's Day, Easter, birthdays; she could talk her Mom into hosting a house full of people every time. Christmas was her favourite holiday and she eagerly awaited each one, full of wonder and excitement, watching her open her gift from Santa was just as anticipated. Kirstin made friends easily wherever she went; age did not matter. She was happy and positive and made everyone feel special. Many of her girlfriends had been friends since high school. As they got married and became mothers, Kirstin took so much pleasure in celebrating these special times in their lives with them. It was important to her to be involved in their children's lives and she loved them all like her own. All the special events and fun times were captured by Kirstin's phone or tablet. She was the queen of the selfie. It's hard to figure out how she managed to capture the perfect photo every time. The photos barely did justice to her inimitable sense of style. She always looked so polished and beautiful with little effort. Kirstin loved big and beautiful bling; earrings, bracelets and necklaces and she could carry it off. She loved modelling clothes and got her start in Grandma Kaye's closet and jewellery box when she was just a little girl. Kirstin loved to bake, and recently in August picked a massive pail of Saskatoon berries that she used to bake a half-dozen pies and three dozen tarts with Grandma's secret recipe. She loved to participate in sports and activities and went to hot yoga and the gym, bowling with friends and curling with family. Kirstin believed life was for living. Live, laugh, and love were not just words on a poster. She had a zest for life and wanted to take in as much of it as she could. She travelled to Calgary and Sooke, BC to visit her cousins, Vegas for a friend's wedding, and to her favourite destination, Cuba. She went camping, volunteered at Folk Fest and The Junos, went to concerts, and participated in walks and runs. She loved music of all kinds, from classic country to hip hop. Kirstin worked hard, sometimes even two jobs at the same time. She took pride in her work, and it gave her a sense of purpose. She loved to keep busy and loved the social aspect of the job. She made many friends while working at Safeway, at South Beach Casino and most recently at St. Andrews Day Care where she found a whole new eager world awaiting. One of Kirstin's tattoos read, "Let the world be better for you," which was a line from the Robert Service poem "Carry On!" and was read at her grandfather's funeral in 2004. This is how she lived and the world is better for Kirstin. She was happiest when those around her were happy, and hated to see anyone sad or upset. She loved to laugh and her laugh was infectious to those around her. We are sure that Kirstin is reunited with family who left this world before her and that Grandpa Stewart has the crib board out and the cards already dealt. She was a talented and gifted woman, was a highly respected and competent employee, and cared deeply for all people. She was a deeply treasured and loved daughter and sister, and although she is gone we will never forget her. We will carry on for her as she would for us. A celebration of Kirstin's life will take place on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 1:00 p.m., at the Gilbart Funeral Home in Selkirk, 309 Eveline St., Selkirk, MB. In keeping with Kirstin's spirit, please take the time to make someone's day more special, to make someone laugh. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Kirstin's memory to MADD Canada Winnipeg. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
