DONALD ERNEST CHUBEY It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and proud veteran on September 12, 2014 at the Selkirk General Hospital. Left to cherish his memory are his sons Donald (Patricia), Michael (Tina) and Patrick (Josie); grandchildren Curtis (Hosai), Brittany (Matthew), Michael Jr. (Gheela) and Alyssa; and great-granddaughter, Osienna. He will also be missed by his brothers Norman (Marilyn) and Ralph (Linda), sister-in-law Violet Mackelson, and many nieces and nephews and other close friends. Don was predeceased by his wife Pearl, mother Natalie, sister Marlaena Reinhardt, in-laws Charles and Lena Mackelson and his brother and sisters-in-law. Dad was born on July 12, 1926 in Otterburne, MB. Being a child of the great depression he knew what it was like to experience hard times and that experience influenced him throughout his life. He served with the Canadian Army during the Second World War (P.P.C.L.I.) and was a lifetime Legion Member. He was a Past President of the ANAF where he was instrumental in establishing the Anavet Cup for Junior Hockey. Dad had many occupations throughout his lifetime including owning and operating a service station/body shop (Weston Service) in Winnipeg. He also worked for C.P. Rail and finally with Manitoba Highways Dept. from which he retired. Don and Pearl raised their boys on Goldstone Road in St. Andrews at a time when you knew all your neighbours and everyone helped each other and the community. They enjoyed travelling, especially in Manitoba for fairs and festivals as well as road trips to the USA. After retirement there were Caribbean cruises and many winters as snowbirds in south Texas. Dad especially loved Cuba and it's people as it became his favourite place to visit. Dad's hobbies included gardening, tinkering with vehicles (especially his 1917 Chevrolet Touring) and spending time with his grandchildren. The final years of his life were spent at Woodland Courts in Selkirk. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Friday, September 19 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, 309 Eveline St., Selkirk. A private family interment will take place at Little Britain United Churchyard. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. R. Zoppa, the staff at Selkirk General Hospital, Selkirk Homecare, Melanie from Palliative Care and the wonderful staff and friends at Woodland Courts for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund in Don's memory. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
