ARTHUR MITCHELL CHAMBERLAIN Peacefully on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at the Selkirk General Hospital, our beloved husband, father and grandfather Arthur Mitchell Chamberlain passed away at the age of 89. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Louise; children Linda (Dwight), Brenda (Dale), and Susan (David); and his grandchildren Jennifer (Rodney), Bradley, Marlo, Kelly, Jodi, Carly and Evan, who always made him smile, laugh and were his pride and joy. He also leaves his brother John (Dorothy); sisters Mabel and Lucy; brother-in-law Trevor DeStiger; sister-in-law Isabella Chamberlain and many nieces and nephews who affectionately knew him as Uncle Bun. Dad was born in the rural farming community of Rossdale, Manitoba. He was born on July 19, 1925 to Edward and Annie Chamberlain. He was one of 10 children. He grew up helping out on the farm and lent a hand to anyone in need. In 1949 he met the love of his life Louise Pearson and on August 11, 1951, they were married at Old St. Andrews Church. Together, they bought an old farm house in St. Andrews. Dad, being the handyman he was, worked hard to restore the house and make it into their home. Together they raised their family and created 50 years of happy memories there. After his marriage Dad continued to grain farm but knew he needed more to sustain his family. He took a job in Winnipeg at Marshall Wells where he worked there for 17 years. In 1970 he then went to work with his brother Bob building and renovating. Dad always loved working with his hands and his brothers! In 1972 he took on another job doing restoration work at Lower Fort Garry. He worked there until he retired in 1989. During his years of retirement, Dad loved to work in his workshop. He had many projects that kept him and his grandkids busy! Mom and Dad continued to enjoy time at the farm house until 2001. At that time, Mom and Dad decided to downsize and sold their farm in St. Andrews and moved into Kiwanis Gardens in Selkirk. Dad was also very involved in the community, giving back and helping out. He served on the Rossdale School Board, on the St. Andrews Church Vestry, and helped with maintenance of the church. Dad's kind heart and selfless ways always saw him lending a hand to anyone in need. From family to friends, to neighbours and at times to complete strangers, he was always there. During his long and full life, Dad also found time to go fishing and duck hunting with his brothers, curling, playing cards and walks with Mom. He also loved to play the harmonica with the Harmonicats and with his ability to play music by ear allowed him to play the piano and accordion. Many memorable moments were created on our family holidays at West Hawk Lake, visits to California, and house boating on the Shuswap Lake. When Dad retired, he and Mom spent many wonderful years traveling to the East Coast of Canada, Europe, Hawaii, California and trips to BC visiting their children. They were also part of the Good Sam Trailer Club where they travelled throughout Canada and the United States with friends and family. Dad was a loving, kind and devoted man. He lived life with dignity, humility, and a great sense of family. He will be missed by many. A memorial service will be held in his honour on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Gilbart Funeral Home, 309 Eveline Street, Selkirk, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Andrews Anglican Church, 3 St. Andrews Road, St. Andrews, Manitoba, R1A 2Y4.
