MARJORIE EDITH CHAMBERLAIN It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Majorie Edith Chamberlain, age 96, at the Pinawa General Hospital on October 8, 2014. Marge is survived by her sisters Lucy VanMol and Mabel Gawne; brother John; sisters-in-law Dorothy, Louise, Isabella and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother Annie; father Edward; brothers Bill, Bob, Don, Ted and Arthur; twin sister Grace; sisters-in-law Agnes, Grace and Eleanor; brothers-in-law Clarence Pritchard, John VanMol, Jim Gawne, her niece Joan Gawne and nephew Richard Chamberlain. Marge and her twin sister Grace were born in Rossdale MB on December 29, 1917 to Annie and Edward Chamberlain. She was raised in a close-knit family with nine other siblings, but shared a very special and strong bond with her twin sister Grace. They spent countless hours together throughout their lifetime. Her family faced many hard times through the depression era. They were dairy and grain farmers, which did not bring in a lot of money during those years. They couldn't afford store bought food, so everything was grown and home made. Having to cook for a family of 12, is what made her well known throughout her life for her amazing cooking and baking skills. She attended Rossdale School, where she was fortunate enough to complete 11 years of schooling. She loved studying music and physiology which were her favourite subjects. A new phase of her life began after completing school. Her first job was as a housekeeper for Dr. and Mrs. G. Ross and later she worked for Dr. Olie Johnson where she also had the responsibility of looking after their children. She then continued her schooling enrolling in Success Business College, where she took courses in bookkeeping and typing. After graduation she accepted a job at Birks Jewelers where she worked for three years. She was subsequently hired at Ashdown's retail store where she was employed for 18 years. Marge moved to Lower Fort Garry and worked as a Parlour Maid animator, in the Big House until she retired in 1982. In her leisure time Marge enjoyed being part of the Young Women's club, working for the Red Cross knitting socks, and knitting mitts for the Cheer Board. Marge also enjoyed knitting and crocheting table clothes, bed spreads and afghans as well as doing embroidery. Her work was always beautifully done and she would proudly give them as gifts to friends and relatives. She enjoyed bowling and attending Old St. Andrews Church with her family. Marge lived most of her life on the family farm with her mother. She hosted many, many family gatherings sometimes cooking and baking for up to 54 people at a time! She was very well known for her delicious dinner rolls, and her flaming Christmas pudding! Everything was lovingly prepared and there was always plenty to go around. With Marge's excellent care, Mother Chamberlain was able to remain at the homestead until her passing at the age of 101. Marge lived in the house for an additional five years until she downsized and moved into Kiwanis Gardens in Selkirk with her sister Grace. At the age of 89 she moved into the Betel Home where she lived for the past seven years. She will be sadly missed by those she leaves behind. Thanks to the Betel Home for the wonderful care they provided Marjorie. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 17, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk MB. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Old St. Andrews Anglican Church, 3 St. Andrews Road, St. Andrews MB. R1A 2Y4. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I am one of the Johnson kids that had the great good fortune to have Marjorie in my life. First she was one of the kindest caring persons to look after the three of us. The games we'd play. I also consider it a great gift to have spent time at the farm when I was a child getting to know all the much loved members of the family. A quote "what is a life? What do we leave behind, that can't be worn down by wind, or time, or fire? It is the trace we leave on memory." Reading of Marjorie's death and tributes of the family brings me many wonderful memories. My life is better for knowing Marjorie and all the Chamberlains. God bless you all, love Alexandra - Posted by: Alexandra Jonsson (Friend) on: Oct 16, 2014

  • I had the privilege of working with Marge at Lower Fort Garry for ten years. She was a special and gracious lady and I will always remember her playing her role as a parlour maid so well. I also remember he keen sense of humor. My condolences to her family. May she rest in peace. Sincerely, Louise - Posted by: Louise Yokimas (fellow co-worker and friend) on: Oct 15, 2014
