LOUIS (LUKE) BERNARD THERRIEN SR Peacefully on Saturday, October 4, 2014 with his family by his side, Louis passed away at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 91 years. He was born on July 5, 1923 in St. Jean, MB. Lou was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He had a great sense of humour, always quick with a joke or a 'comeback' and could entertain a whole room. He was the kind of man that was always there when you needed him. He was always willing to help friends and family, he would give you the shirt off his back. Louis was predeceased by his wife of 52 years Shirley Ann Therrien, his son David Therrien and his three sisters Florence French, Renee Cadotte and Noella (Willman) Henry. He leaves to mourn his passing his daughter Tracy Therrien (Brad), his son Louis Therrien (Karen), and grandchildren Jennifer Ashford (Ryan), Kelsey Therrien, Wayne Therrien, Lauren Therrien and many more close family members and friends. At the age of 17 and a half years he fought for Canada in the Second World War as a camando with the artillery unit, he was overseas for five and a half years. Upon his return from the war he married his beautiful bride, shortly thereafter they moved from Vancouver to Winnipeg where they settled to raise their family in St. Vital. Louis was a very successful insurance salesman, winning many awards for top salesman in his field. After retiring from Dale and Company he started his own insurance company called Therrien Insurance Services, which he operated for many years before retiring again at the age of 70 years. He was always a leader in his community, being very involved with several groups. He was a campaign manager for the Liberal party for many years working with politicians who went on to become city councilors and other distinguished leaders including Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. He was actively involved in all the groups that he belonged to including President of the St. Vital Legion, President of St. Vital, Nicolette and Fort Garry Curling Clubs. In 1993 he started a workshop called Norshel Centre when his mentally challenged son David turned 19 years of age. At that time there were no facilities that would hire mentally challenged adults, Dad decided that that was going to change and with a lot of dedication and hard work Norshel Centre was born. He was on the board for 15 years and Norshel is still a successful corporation to this day. The family would like to thank the aids, nurses and doctors on the 5th floor, Wing E Medicine for their compassion and care. In keeping with Louis' wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held in the Coutu Funeral Chapel at 680 Archibald Street on Friday, October 17, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire please make donations to Norshel Centre or Special Olympics. In my first year of university I took a history of war and peace course. In that course an assignment was to interview someone who was involved in any way with any battle in history. Since I have no one in my family, I decided to make some phone calls to some of the legions in Winnipeg and was referred to Lou. I was honoured to meet Lou and spend the afternoon that I did with him. His stories are something that I will never forget and his personality will always be in my heart. I would like to share my condolences to Lou's family, he was a very great man and I'm very thankful that I had the chance to meet, speak with, and learn from Lou. Rest in peace, Lou. - Posted by: Matthew Cline () on: Dec 11, 2015

Dear Tracy & Brad I just happened to read the Winnipeg Free Press Passages and notice Louis obituary. I am so sorry, every time I flew to Winnipeg I would visite him & we would go out & have supper he just loved his spaghetti and never wanted us to pay for it, that is the way Louis was so kind. You were fortunate to have enjoyed life with him to his 91th year. May God bless you both. Lou and I met in 1997 at the Fort Garry Curling Club. Lou came in and asked mr who you he could contact in order to curl with the Club. I responded and his next question was: "Where can I get some honey". I told him a knew a place but you had to give your name and wait at least 3 years. He said "3 years?, why do you have to wait so long?". I replied: "the guy just has one bee". That was it. He went home that night and told his wife, he had met a real joker. That same night, my wife and I were at Red Top and Lou and his wife also came in. I walked over and introduced my wife to him, and he in turn said to his wife, "this is the joker I met today at the Club!" From that day on we became the best of friends. Lou and I went for breakfast every morning even on weekends. Lou and I sold the 50/50 for the Fort Garry Seniors for 13 years together. If anyone could sell a ticket, Lou had the knack. We also sold 50/50 for "Ron Lloyd's Bonspiel" which lasted 8-9 days from 8 am till 2 pm. Lou became one of our family as well. We would take him to Fall Suppers, Lockport, and he introduced us to fishing at Forest Lake Lodge at Vermillion Bay, ON. Lou's favourite saying was "C'est la vie", his favourite saying for things we could not change. My wife and I will miss our "dear friend" tremendously. C'est la Vie Lou! you will never be forgotten.
