EMILY SHARKEY (nee PREBOY) Peacefully, and surrounded by her family, Emily returned to Jesus on October 5, 2014. Emily (baptized Emilie Priboj) was born on the homestead in Fox Valley, Saskatchewan on March 24, 1918 to Annie Mitchell (Mican) of Pennsylvania and John Preboy of Slovakia. Emily was the oldest of eight children, followed by Joe, Albert, Margaret, Jeanette, Johnny, Geraldine and Annette. She graduated from the one room Fox Valley School and taught there from 1937 to 1941. Her love of learning took her to the University of Alberta where she obtained a Bachelor of Science and then to Normal School in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. She later moved to Winnipeg where she met Jim Sharkey from Corraville, PEI at a dance. They married in 1948 and had three children, Geraldine (Shawn) Carson, Brian (Michele) Sharkey and Donnette (Jim) Montgomery. She was blessed with 11 grandchildren: Evan, Darren and Kristen Carson; Rowan, Skye, Bryn, Bria, Rhys and Liam Sharkey; Trevor and Jessica Montgomery. She was also blessed with three great-grandchildren: Emily, Kyra, and Finn Carson. Emily adored her children and grandchildren; she spent countless hours with them doing art projects with paint, ink, paper maché and pastels. We remember her fondly for her poppyseed cake with pistachio icing, feeding the kids dessert before dinner, shopping for groceries on a bus transfer, toting a truckload of library books home for the children to read, a fascination with squirrels and bunny rabbits and an undying love of the farm. Emily and Jim brought their young children back to Fox Valley every summer to spend time with their grandparents. Teaching art was Emily's passion. In Winnipeg she taught at Lord Roberts, J.B. Mitchell, Hugh John Macdonald and Sargent Park schools. Still having boundless energy at 65, she was hopping mad about mandatory retirement. Two years later she was happy to have enjoyed the time with Jim before his death in 1985. Emily's family would like to extend our deep appreciation to the remarkable staff at Misericordia Place...Robin Way was a place full of love and the best of care. Emily was not pleased to leave her home but was very happy once she settled in her new home; for this we are eternally grateful. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, October 17 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ignatius Church, 255 Stafford St. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-586-8044
