DONNA BETTY BARNES Peacefully in Rancho Mirage, CA on September 11, 2014, age 87. Survived by brother Philip (Marta, Palm Springs), sister Carol Fehr, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Shirley and Fred, brother Sidney, and lifelong partner Miriam. Leaving Winnipeg at age 17 to complete her specialty in pediatric nursing via Chicago and New York City, Donna located to Los Angeles, where she was a public health nurse in very challenging communities. Donna took on the role of consummate caregiver to all. She was selfless in her generosity and assistance to family and friends, but she particularly adored children and had an instinctive way of engaging with them. This led to her being a profound and lifelong influence on her nieces and nephews, as many valuable practical skills were taught with her unique brand of authority and patience. With her love of road trips, Donna often elected to be driver/tour guide to friends and family, creating memories and lore that remain priceless. Donna's love of food was legendary, surpassed only by her love of a bargain. Her best kind of day was a meal at one of her favourite unhealthy choice restaurants before or after finding a deal somewhere. She was larger than life, called a spade a shovel, but could cry at the drop of a hat at a sad movie. Personifying strength and independence, Donna lived her life in an unassuming way, with the rare qualities of being beloved by all and relied upon by many. We have lost a wonderful human being with a heart of gold. The family would like to acknowledge the amazing support of friend Rachel for her devotion and assistance.
