Date of Passing: Oct 13, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOSEPH LAWRENCE FRANZ Peacefully on October 13, 2014 Joseph (Joe) passed away at Lion's Manor Personal Care Home in Winnipeg. Joseph was born on September 29, 1920 at Berlo, Manitoba to parents Johann and Apolonia (Marks) Franz. Joseph valued education and so made a great effort to attend high school in Gimli. After a brief stint in the army he worked for the C.P.R. then returned to Berlo to farm. In the early 1950s he began work at the air base in Gimli working there for 20 odd years. He eventually moved the family to the town. In Gimli Joseph was very active in St. Michael's Parish, was the scoutmaster of the Boy Scout Troop and served two terms on the town council of Gimli. He was the first chairman of the Evergreen Regional Library Board and was very proud of his part in its formation. With the closure of the air base he transferred to Environment Canada in Winnipeg where he worked until his retirement. What followed were 20 happy years at the cottage he built in Arnes where he gardened, fished, and enjoyed each and every day to the fullest. Family was always important and he spent all his free time with his children, grandchildren and assorted family always willing to lend a hand. He is survived by his beloved wife Helen, their children Larry (Lorraine), Adrienne (Allan) Koblun and Mark; grandchildren Melanie (Richard) Arndt, James Franz, Andrea (Greg) McDonald and Christopher (Lori) Franz; great-grandchildren Kelby and Aimee Arndt, Jack, Logan, William and Benjamin McDonald and Hailey Franz; also his sisters-in-law Anne Franz and Tillie Franz, and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, all his siblings: Emily Dick, Kate (Malcom) MacDonald, Anton (Vera), Mary (Harry) Stephenson, Anna Warren, Adam, John, Michael (baby), Elizabeth (William) Moore, and his grandson Dale Koblun. The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Lion's Manor for their kindness and care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the bursary fund at St. Paul's High School, 2200 Grant Avenue or the charity of your choice. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 18 at St. Michael's Church in Gimli. Interment to follow. 204-586-8044

I remember Uncle Joe fondly. Especially when I was little and we were still in Gimli. I would go down the block and visit. As well as when I would go to Gimli in the summer times when I was a teenager. He and Aunt Helen always had time for me. Thanks for the memories. Sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Diana Simonson (Margaret Stamp's daughter) on: Oct 17, 2014

I didn't see him as often as I would have liked but I always made a point of visiting whenever I was in Gimli or Winnipeg. He was my 'favorite uncle' and I always enjoyed his company. My condolences on your loss. - Posted by: Denise Stamp (grand-niece) on: Oct 16, 2014

What a lovely man. So sorry for your loss. I have few fond memories of him and Auntie Helen and how they made me feel when I was younger. Heartfelt condolences and sympathy to all the family. May he rest in peace. xo - Posted by: Lou-Anne Morin (Richard Haas' daughter) on: Oct 16, 2014

Larry, Adrienne, and Mark ...My deepest sympathy in the loss of your father. I can remember the days when I lived on the farm at Grandma's in Camp Morton, and your dad would extol the virtues of a good education on me. One year when I was about 13 he found out that I had wanted an article of clothing from the Eaton's catalogue, so he made a deal with me. If I passed that grade with good marks he would buy the blouse I wanted as a gift. I worked especially hard, and did just that, and received his gift. I treasured that gift and remembered his kind way of helping me with my education. He was a great mentor. He was a good husband to aunt Helen, and a good father to the three of you. I am sure he must have been a wonderful grandfather as well. I always looked up to him....he was a good man. Now he is in the hands of God. All my love to your family and especially to you Aunt Helen. Janet - Posted by: Janet Rathwell (Cousin) on: Oct 16, 2014
