KENNETH (KEN) JOHN HOMINICK Suddenly, but peacefully at home, Ken passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at the age of 76 years. Ken is survived by his spouse Gayle; daughters LeVerne and Cory (Ken); sister Lesley Small and family; Grant and Alice Tone; the Pozernick family, and George the cat. He was predeceased by his parents Margaret and John Hominick, and by his son, Bill Hominick. Ken was born and raised in Transcona in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a child and youth he was involved in the Boy Scouts and Boys Parliament. He learned to play the accordion despite having, by his own admission, "stubby fingers". While Ken eventually gave up the accordion, he maintained a life-long love of music covering a wide spectrum of styles. Completing his degree as an Industrial and Cost Accountant, Ken embarked on a lengthy career with the provincial government. He held the position of Director of Construction and Planning for several years before departing to work as an independent consultant until his retirement. Ken also provided his skills as "bean counter" in his role as a volunteer board member with the Canadian Hemophilia Society. Ken kept his mind sharp with word and number puzzles, and was an avid follower of local and international news and politics. He loved playing Santa Claus for children's Christmas parties large and small, and delighted many friends and family over the years as Jolly Old St. Nick. In retirement Ken and Mom travelled extensively, including a trip to Ireland, but they eventually settled on wintering in Florida. They made many new friends and had a few adventures during their time in Griffwood. In recent years, Ken was challenged with chronic health issues but he rarely complained. He lived life with good humour and a smile. The family spent a beautiful Thanksgiving Day at LeVerne's farm where Ken enjoyed visiting with the animals and of course partaking of the many edible delights prepared for the occasion. We are thankful to have had that time together before his unexpected, but peaceful passing the next day. As per Ken's wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. An informal Celebration of Ken's Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • My brothers Len, Dennis and I would like to express our deepest condolences to Gayle and family, Lesley and family. We lived next door to Ken on Kildare Ave. when we were all children. We have fond memories of Ken, Lesley, their parents and grandparents. Coincidentally we have similar last names but are not related. Ken's uncle Joe built both our home and Ken's parent's home. I remember Ken had a pet crow named Chloe that would come and sit on our clothesline in the summer. I also remember Ken riding his bicycle a lot with his boy friends often going to Bird's Hill. Blessings, Joan (Homeniuk) Cody, San Francisco - Posted by: Joan Cody (former neighbor) on: Oct 25, 2014

  • I worked for Ken at Manitoba Health and have the utmost respect for his abilities and personal attributes. He was the best Santa ever at too many MH Children's Christmas parties to count. He always made me smile with his "fantastic" when asked how he was that morning. You'll be missed. - Posted by: Dave Arbuthnott (Reported to Ken - Director of Capital and Planning) on: Oct 20, 2014

  • Gayle. I'm so so sorry you have lost your Ken. We had such fun working together in the old White Paper Working Group and the construction division. He was Santa at Shannon's 3rd Birthday Party. And did a grand job. I know you will miss him terribly. Take care Linda Venus - Posted by: Linda Venus (Bakken) (Friend and co worker ) on: Oct 19, 2014

  • Our condolences to Gayle and family, Lesley and family and all who share the loss. Ken's time with us holds a treasure of memories filled with love, happiness and fun times. Ken has now passed from time to eternity where he will receive the Lord's blessings in God's house. Thank you Ken for blessing us with your time. - Posted by: Danny & Gail Adair (Cousin) on: Oct 18, 2014

  • I am so saddened to learn of Ken's passing. He was a kind gentle man with a wonderful sense of humour. In my early days as a government employee, Ken offered guidance and words of wisdom on "how things worked", but always with a smile. The world is a poorer place. My deepest condolences to his entire family. - Posted by: Andrea Zajac (Former colleague from Manitoba Health) on: Oct 18, 2014

  • We will miss our good neighbour Ken with his cheerful smile and amiable chuckle every time we chatted with him. He always made us laugh with his jokes and amusing observations about many subjects, but especially the neighbourhood squirrels which Ken always kept a watchful eye on, including the one that broke into our gazebo last January and almost gnawed its way into a cooler filled with Tall Grass Prairie bread. As Ken sat eating his lunch at his kitchen window he watched the squirrel hard at work, but eventually the squirrel gave up and Ken told us, with his trademark chuckle, "He either got tired or he ran out of teeth". We sure will miss Ken's great sense of humour. - Posted by: Joanne & Alain (Neighbours) on: Oct 18, 2014

  • Rest in Peace! Your forgotten daughter Kendra Haight (Hominick) - Posted by: Kendra Haight (Daughter) on: Oct 18, 2014
