EDELINE (EDIE) LILIAN HAILSTONE Edeline Lilian Hailstone aged 81, a resident of the Betel Care Home in Selkirk, MB passed peacefully from this world October 15, 2014 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Edeline was born January 27, 1933 in Hull, East Yorkshire, England. She was adopted by George Stanley and Edith Richardson. She attended Villa Place Girls School also in Hull, where she was an outstanding student. Edeline was also an avid swimmer while at school and earned her First Class Lifesaving Certificate. The love of swimming continued throughout her life. On July 23, 1954 at the age of 21 she married her pen pal and sweetheart, Percy Hailstone, a member of the Queen's Coldstream Guards. She worked for several years at Smith & Nephews Factory until the birth of their children. She then became a full time stay at home mom. Edie lived in numerous locations in England, those being Hull, Oxford and St. Albans before emigrating to Canada with her husband and children in the summer of 1967. Edie worked as a nurses aide at both Red River Place Personal Care Home and Middlechurch Personal Care Home. The latter from where she received an award for lengthy, dedicated service. The loves of Edie's life were first and foremost her family and her pets. It was not unusual for Edeline's family to come home to the smell of baking throughout the house. Pies were one of her specialties, the counter would be laden with many different varieties. Edie and her husband were well known in the Canadian Kennel Club and the Bull Terrier community and spent many enjoyable years breeding and showing Bull Terriers throughout the U.S and Canada. Edeline enjoyed reading books and magazines. Many an hour was spent knitting or reading, with a dog or two curled up beside her. She and Percy enjoyed music and dancing, and they cut quite a figure on the dance floor with their ballroom style dancing. Edeline is survived by her children; Pauline (Doug) Cook, Robert (Bonnie) Hailstone, Ian (Sue) Hailstone. Also grandchildren; Candice Cook-Ohryn, Jordan Cook, Tyler Hailstone Gerald Hailstone, Amber Hailstone and Jennifer Hailstone and great-grandchildren Joseph Hailstone and Leland Hailstone. Edeline is predeceased by her beloved husband Percy in 2002 and also her parents. A private family graveside service will be held later in the week. Persons wishing to make a donation may do so in Edeline's name to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4G2. The family would like to thank the staff of The Betel Care Home for the many years of outstanding care and compassion Mom received. Somewhere in our hearts beneath all our grief and pain, Is a smile we still wear at the sound of your dear name. The precious word is 'MOTHER', she was our world you see, But now our hearts are breaking cause she's no longer here with us God chose her for His angel to watch us from above, To guide us and advise us and know that we're still loved. The day she had to leave us when her life on earth was through, God had better plans for her, for this, we surely knew. When we think of her kind heart and all those loving years, Our memories surround us and we can't hold back the tears. She truly was our best friend, someone we could confide in, She always had a tender touch and a warm and gentle grin. I want to thank you Mother for teaching us so well, And though the time has come that we must bid you this farewell. We'll remember all you've taught us and make you proud you'll see. Thank you our Dear Mother for all the love you showed us. Although you've left this earth and now you've taken flight, We know that you are here with us each morning, noon and night. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • We just yesterday (Sept 7, 2015) learned of Edie's passing nearly a year ago. She is at peace now and reunited with her love, Percy. We had so many good times with Edie and Percy and will always treasure those memories. Our mutual love for bull terriers brought us together and for that we will be forever grateful. She cherished her family and we extend our sincerest condolences to Robert, Pauline, Ian and all of their families. Peace. - Posted by: Gordon and Norma Smith (friend) on: Sep 08, 2015

  • I don't know Pauline, Robert and Ian, if you will ever see this, but I would like you to know, that I once visited you all when you lived in St Albans. Your mum n dad welcomed my friend and I for a week. When I was a little girl I lived opposite your grandma. Your mum as you know, was such a treasure. She cooked and baked for us and took very good care of us. Your father was very amusing and used to tell us all about his mishaps when he was in the Queen's guards....he had us in "Stitches" I have been trying to find them for the past few years through ancestry and today finally found this story......It has helped me catch up with your mum and dad's lives...just so sorry I didn't find them so many years ago. Take care....love n hugs to you all xx Avril xx - Posted by: Avril Benstead (Friend of long ago) on: Aug 08, 2015
