DR. MORRIS BRODER Dr. Morris Broder, aka "The Great One" passed away on October 12, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by brother Ernie Broder, sister Blanche Young, and brother-in-law Sam Shapiro. He is survived by his devoted wife, soul mate, and best friend of 63 years, Shirley, brother Saul Broder, sister-in-law Betty Shapiro, children, Harley and Corinne Broder, Anita and Lyone Hochman, Ellery and Libby Broder, Richard Broder and Carol Hargreaves, his loving grandchildren Jeremy and Jennifer Hochman, Daniel and Lara Hochman, Matthew Hochman, Tamara Broder, Josh Broder, Jonathan Broder, Aron Broder, Ethan Broder, Seth Broder, and great-grandchild Maya Hochman, with whom he had the strongest of bonds. His career as a surgeon spanned more than 50 years, including holding the position of Chief of Surgery. He had a profound impact on not only the well being of his patients but their families as well. His love of medicine throughout his entire life did not just involve surgical technique, but always stressed the importance of the humanistic aspects of medicine. He loved the outdoors, which extended to his passion for running, jogging, and walking at Winnipeg Beach and Assiniboine Park. As many can attest to, he was a constant fixture greeting all with his many stories and unique sense of humour. Morris will be sorely missed not only by his family but the many friends, relatives, colleagues and walking buddies, whose lives he touched and who all held a special place in his heart. A special thanks to Riverview Hospital and the very special staff at E3 wing, and all those who were involved in his care throughout his illness. The physical loss saddens us, but the spiritual elevation is celebratory. Like a book, with a beginning and an end, the story lives on!

  • I was just saying to my husband that I had not seen Morris this year and I hoped he was well. I have so many great memories of the walks with Morris from Winnipeg Beach to the Sandy Hook sign. Always in good spirits and willing to share stories of his interesting life. He will be missed. I will use the memory of his youthful spirit to keep me walking. - Posted by: Ann Maxwell (Winnipeg Beach Walking Buddy) on: Oct 18, 2014
