LEON ROSS COLLINS March 17, 1954 - October 18, 2014 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Leon. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He was a devoted husband, father, and friend who will be missed beyond words. Leon is survived by his wife Jane "Whiteside", of 32 years, daughter Lacey Forbes (Scott), son Trenton (fiancé Laura Marzoff), daughter Morgan (partner Sara Barsky); brother Marsh (Debbie); nieces: Kelly (Adam), son Quinn; Leslie (Jamie), daughters Blake and Haven); and Laura; cousin Marney and Ed Scribner, Lisa (JC) and Karen (Zbigniew); "Far Away" family from Sandy Lake, Ontario, and last but not least his best friend Essey (Sam Edward). Leon was predeceased by his father Herbert Lloyd Collins, mother Joyce Mary Collins, and grandparents Joseph Allan Grundy and Dorothy Grundy. Leon grew up in the West End, attending Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute. He had wonderful memories of hockey and football at Orioles Community Centre. He made lifelong friends with stories to tell like it was yesterday. Leon was an Instrumentation Technologist and Certified Engineering Technologist employed with Trans-West Process Control & Automation. Leon was passionate about his chosen field. Over the course of his 30-year career his travels included working in Saudi Arabia for over seven years with a young family in tow. Leon had a keenly inquisitive mind and enjoyed nothing more than sharing his knowledge. Leon was ever so proud of his family and would take every opportunity to share a story. He loved the outdoors, camping at Big Whiteshell, fishing, horseshoes, golfing, boating, and more. He was thrilled that "the kids enjoyed it as much as he did" and got a kick out of tubing and most recently waterskiing. We would like to thank Mr. Greg Troilo of Trans-West Thunder Bay and the Trans-West Winnipeg office for their compassion and support during Leon's illness. Thank you to Doctors Srinathan, Gall, Maksymiuk, and nurse Megan for your kind and compassionate care. Cremation has already taken place. A celebration of Leon's life will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel on Friday, October 24, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. Honorary pallbearers Trenton Collins, Scott Forbes, Marsh Collins, Chubb Chabot, Luciano Guffei, and Tony Persoage. Interment will take place at a later date. If friends so desire, donations can be made to the Children's Wish Foundation. 204-586-8044

Condolences & Memories (21 entries)

  • During Leon`s path through life, he even became a fire fighter for a time. Leon and I started with the Winnipeg Fire Department together and sat next to each other through basic training. For that period in his life, Leon was a dedicated fire fighter who gave himself to saving and serving others. I still recall his smile, exceptional strength and good nature. My log book still bears the dates of those long gone days when we went flying together. My sincere condolences to Marsh, all members of Leon`s family and to his friends. - Posted by: Dennis Lacho (Friend) on: Jan 21, 2015

  • I'm so sorry to hear of Leon's passing. I was a classmate of his back in 1980 at the Red River College Instrumentation Technology program. Leon had a great sense of humour and a genuine love for meeting people. He was a great guy. - Posted by: Stephen Farr (Classmate) on: Oct 31, 2014

  • Our condolences to Jane and Family. Shirley and I were deeply saddened on our return last evening to learn of Leon's passing. Leon and I go back to the very early days as we do with so many West End friends. In the summer months I will sadly miss hearing Leon's booming voice carry from Marsh and Debbie's house, all the way to our back yard as Leon would get his boat(s) ready for yet another season at the Big Whiteshell. Leon, I will miss bumping into you on Willis Rd, and having a quick chat to get your perspective on world politics and life in general. Our conversation was always interesting and just when we had all the world problems sorted out, it was time for us to both move on till our next encounter. Leon, I am fortunate to have known you for so many good years. Rest in peace my friend. Wally and Shirley - Posted by: Walter Lehmann (Friend) on: Oct 25, 2014

  • My most sincere condolences to his family. Many of us will miss Leon's experience, opinion, candor, and indeed wit, all of which were highly respected. I feel truly blessed to have known Leon and enjoyed all of his stories. Over the past few years I also had the opportunity of meeting him and Jane socially at the New Year's events at the Convention Centre. We will all raise a glass to you dear friend! - Posted by: Ralph Guppy (Career associate and friend) on: Oct 23, 2014

  • Very sorry to hear of Leon's passing and my condolences to his family. As a former classmate and roommate to Leon many years ago at General Wolfe and later at Red River I knew him to be a friend. He enjoyed bomber games and a card game and was a good man to have around when the going got rough. Another original "west ender", he will be missed. Godspeed Leon. - Posted by: Tim Dubois (schoolmate) on: Oct 23, 2014

  • My condolences to Jane and family. I have been friends with Leon since elementary and I think Bryan was right, you guys ran the school well at least our little circle of friends. I have admired Leon since he was captain of the patrols at Greenway. He was always self assured, loyal to his friends and loved his family. I loved listening to his stories of family, work and later his courageous battle. Although I have been away from Wpg, when we did find ourselves at the same place he always made a point to chat and get caught up with what's been going on in our lives. His passing leaves the world a little quieter. - Posted by: Dorothy Kufflick (Friend) on: Oct 22, 2014

  • Leon was my best friend in elementary school (Greenway). I like to think that between both of us we ran the school. We had fun, got into trouble, and experienced life. I always remember the little house on Lipton and his family growing up. I've been away from the 'Peg for years, but I still have clear, fond memories of Leon. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Bryan Gough (Friend) on: Oct 22, 2014

  • The sadness I feel is heartbreaking, Leon was a friend and my other brother. I have so many memories, the Halloween parties, Many New Years Eve parties always grabbing a dance with him and him taking care of me when I was a silly young girl and went to Toronto with no money and his brotherly way of making sure my friend and I would be ok. We will miss Leon and his advice to us all. Jane and Family my Thoughts are with you, Chuck and I are so sorry we won't be there but I hope you know our prayers will be. We will be in touch when we get back. To a great Friend, Brother Love Yvonne and Chuck - Posted by: Yvonne and Chuck Neufeld (Friend) on: Oct 22, 2014

  • Leon will be missed. I met him shortly after we moved in right across the street, and all the stories he told me about his own children growing up on the block made me feel like I had picked the right place to raise my family. Leon was a big part of what makes Home St. feel like a community. My condolences to all of you. - Posted by: Sarah () on: Oct 22, 2014
