KARLA ANNE FERENS It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Karla Anne Ferens at the age of 24, on October 23, 2014. Karla will be forever missed by parents Don and Kathy, brother Craig and her beloved cats Kazam and Kuda. She leaves to mourn her passing many aunts, uncles, cousins, Grandma Ferens, teammates, co-workers and close friends. From an early age, Karla was always active and full of energy. Athletic and strong-willed, she excelled at gymnastics (at age four she was the cartwheel queen). Summers were full of fun spent at Lee River and Big Whiteshell, swimming, tubing, and adventuring in "Sherwood Forest" with family and friends. During her teen years she spent her time snowboarding, especially at Big Sky Montana and Big White, in Kelowna, BC. Karla also took up competitive cheerleading with Grant Park and Kelvin High Schools from Grade 7 to Grade 12. This allowed her to showcase her dancing and gymnastics prowess! As a young woman, she continued her passion for athletics. Karla was very focused on her physical training! She competed in novice MABBA events, and placed first in the Fitness Category this spring. Karla also provided mentorship and personal training to aspiring female athletes wanting to get into competitive fitness. Karla poured her passionate nature into her job as a healthcare worker at St. Boniface Hospital, where she dedicated herself to the care of others. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Addiction Foundation of Manitoba (Attention Finance Department, 3rd Floor, 1031 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3G 0P8) or Canadian Mental Health Association / Winnipeg, 930 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3G 0R8. Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held at a later date.

  • I had the joy and privilege of working with Karla at St. Boniface. I remember one of my very first shifts I was working alongside her, nervous and unsure of myself and Karla met me with a big smile and a ton of enthusiasm and assured me I'd be fine, I just had to be confident in my abilities and lean on her if I needed her. From that shift on-wards, every time she saw me she took the time to smile and stop and ask how I was doing. She was such a bright light, her energy and passion for her job and her life were inspiring. I am so saddened by her loss and wish to extend heartfelt condolences to her family. Such a tragic loss. She will always be remembered. - Posted by: Jennifer (co-worker) on: Oct 30, 2014

  • I met Karla in Pioneer Camp when we were about 12. I have lots of memories of her- camping at shoal lake, going out to her family's cabin in lake of the woods, sleepovers and getting into mischief. She was a close friend of mine at one point and although we hadn't spoken in a few years since I moved away, I will always have fond memories of her. My heart broke to hear the news- she had a wicked sense of humor and an infectious laugh to go with it and I know she will be sorely missed by many. My condolences to her family.. <3 - Posted by: Veronica (Friend) on: Oct 29, 2014

  • I met Karla in the gym, at first glance I noticed what amazing legs she had. I approached her only to find out we had competed together on the same stage the previous year. I related to Karla given both our sensitive pasts with our partners. After her mishap with her present partner I again approached her to offer support and let her know she wasn't alone. Karla and I always knew one day we'd meet on the stage again. I knew she was destined to win in her accomplishments with MABBA. She trained hard and strong with determination even after the fact. We often exchanged workout techniques, me being the veteren and her the up and rising. Our last show we exchanged best wishes to one and other and walked out on stage. She was young, confident, and funny to say the least. To young...to short...to soon. My prayers with her family and friends. - Posted by: LauraLee (Friend and competitor) on: Oct 28, 2014
