BERNARD ASHWORTH HODSON September 18, 1928 - October 23, 2014 Our dear father, Bernard Hodson, in his 87th year, died peacefully overnight at the Westwood Retirement Residence in Ottawa, leaving behind a large, loving family. A former R.A.F. nurse from 1947 to 1949, an accomplished mathematician, writer, professor, and computer scientist, Bernard authored several books, including Modern Data Processing for Management, Computers Without Machine Code, and A Lifetime of Change. After graduating with a second class honours degree in Applied Mathematics from Manchester University, Bernard's long, distinguished career included working with satellite systems for the federal government, teaching at the University of Ottawa, inaugurating the computer science department at the University of Manitoba, refining computer technology with Imperial Oil, and founding his own software development companies, Symbionics and Genetix. A former cross-country running enthusiast, Bernard felt especially proud of his professional contribution to jet engines, search and rescue, the aerospace industry, and Canada's Avro Arrow. Profoundly missed by his seven children, David (Suzanne), John, Christine (Andrew), Peter (Vicki), Paul (Laura), Isabella (Kyle), and Andrew (Leanne), and his grandchildren: Luke, Sam, Jack, JD, Kelly, Chris, Peter, Lisa, Cassia, Justine, James, Evan, Keriana, Caelan, and Lily, Bernard will also be lovingly remembered by his sister Brenda, previous long-time companion Terry Drzemczewska,, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins abroad. Born in Bury, England, Bernard was predeceased in his immediate family by his parents Agnes (Ashworth) Hodson and Wilfrid Haslam Hodson, and his sister Vera. Friends may pay respects at the Kelly Funeral Home, Carling Chapel, 2313 Carling Ave., Ottawa, ON K2G 7G3, 613-828-2313 on Thursday, October 30, from 10:00 a.m. until service time in the chapel at 11:00 a.m. If desired, memorial donations in lieu of flowers, may be made in Bernard's name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Lung Association, Covenant House, or a charity of your choice.
