JOAQUIM FIRMINO FERNANDES DA SILVA Suddenly and accidentally, after successfully beating cancer two times in 2013, it is with deep regret that we announce the death of Joaquim on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the Riverview Health Centre at the age of 76 years. Left to cherish Joaquim's memory are his ex-spouse Ermelinda Da Silva; son George (Cristie); daughters Fernanda (Armando), Ilda (Dean); and grandchildren Juliana, Blake, Phillip, Matthew and Sarah; sisters Maria, and Anna (Portugal), Maria Coehlo (Winnipeg); nieces Ircilia (Joao) (Portugal), Louisa (Joao Carlos) and Manuela (Arturo) (Venezuela); and nephews Luis (Wendy), Brady, Delaney, Sierra, Jesse, and Helder (Sofia), Stanley, Jennifer, and Jessica, Arlindo (Eduarda) (Venezuela), Luis (Wanda), Maria Irene (Marc) and Fatima (Marcos); as well as many more nieces; nephews; friends and relatives. He was predeceased by his parents Maria Fernandes and Manuel Firmino Da Silva (Portugal), and earlier in 2014 by his brother Antonio in Burnaby, BC. Joaquim 'Jack' Da Silva was born on November 11, 1937 in Sao Martino, Beira Baixa Portugal and moved to Canada in 1960 to seek a more prosperous life for his future family. His wife Ermelinda would join him in 1962 and together they would raise three children and five grandchildren. Jack loved spending time with his family and friends. He never needed much but he did need people around him smiling and laughing as much as possible, there was never a shortage of unusual jokes in his presence. He helped build the Portuguese Association of Manitoba and subsequently the Portuguese Folk dancers group as well as the Portuguese Association Soccer Club of which he actively danced in and played soccer for before turning his focus to officiating. Jack retired from CN Rail in 1992 as a Carman and soccer refereeing in 1984 as a Class 1 ranking official. His passion was recreation and the outdoors, fishing and hunting until his health would no longer permit it. He spent the better part of his retirement at the Portuguese Campground that he also helped found in St. Laurent, MB, managing the kiddie pool from dawn to dusk to ensure the children had their fun too. He was an avid sports fan following virtually anything with a ball and a competition, but primarily soccer. Jack followed the Portuguese Liga 1 with Sporting Lisbon being his loyal team, and of course his passion the Portuguese National Team. Locally he cherished watching his grandkids play whatever sports they were playing whenever he could. He will be missed in the crowd; in every crowd. Funeral Liturgy will be Celebrated on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 181 Austin Street North with Rev. Msgr. Maurice Comeault P.H. presiding. Pallbearers will be Blake Da Silva, Phillip Felgueiras, Matthew Felgueiras, Armando Felgueiras, Luis Coehlo, and Helder Coehlo. Our family would like to extend a special thank you to the Riverview Health Centre for the care Jack received. Donations in Jack's memory may be made to Riverview Health Centre Foundation, One Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3L 2P4. Wojcik's Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 2157 Portage Avenue, 204.897.4665, is in care of arrangements. wojciksfuneralchapel.com
