Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELGI SIGURDSON June 28, 1926 - October 26, 2014 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, Dad, Afi, and Langafi, Helgi Sigurdson of Gimli, Manitoba. After a long hospital stay he passed peacefully with his family by his side. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Ellen of 60 years, "the boys" Ellis and Craig (Leslie), daughter Kathy, grandchildren Amber, Ashley, Afton, James, David, Sherilyn, Kristin, and great-grandchildren Summer, Jordan and Logan, brother and sisters-in-law Mary, Sigga, Begga, Bernice, and Raymond, numerous nephews and nieces, and friends. Helgi was predeceased by his mother, Ingibjorg, and father, Beggi, his sister, Elin, as well as a twin sister who died at birth. He was also predeceased by brother and sisters-in-law, Kris, Joe, Clarence, Marino, Josie, Stoney, daughter and sons-in-law, Brenda Sigurdson and David Debrecen, and nephews and niece, Terry, Kenneth, and Sheryl-Dawn, as well as many close friends too numerous to mention as Helgi found it interesting to talk to others from all walks of life. Helgi was born in Winnipeg but always considered himself to be a "Hekla-einstaklingur" having grown up on Hecla Island until his family moved to Riverton. He joined the armed forces in 1943 where he trained at Shilo in the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion. He later worked as a civilian in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1953-1990 where he refueled fighter jets and cargo transports. His father was a commercial fisher and Helgi fall fished for many years in Lake Winnipeg, returning for one last season at the age of 73. Helgi's other interests, especially in his younger years, included camping, angling, hunting, wrestling, billiards, carpentry, repairing and inventing things. He was a jack of all trades. In later years, Helgi could be seen around the town of Gimli on his scooter with his beloved dog, Joey, in the basket. Often called "Siggy" by close friends, he always put Mom first and centered his life around family. We love and miss you Dad. As per Helgi's wishes, there is no funeral and private interment has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. We would like to thank Dr. R.C. Patel and the wonderful staff of Gimli - Johnson Memorial Hospital for their kind treatment of Helgi and family. God Bless.
