GEORGE SONES It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dad, George Sones on Sunday November 2, 2014. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 44 years, Beth, daughters Karen (Brent), Tricia (Brad), and son David (Dawn). He was a loving grandfather to Daniel, Sarah, Felicia, Lavaha and Austin. He leaves to mourn his sisters Dianne (Brian), and Margaret, and brother Gordon (Pat). He was predeceased by his parents Gordon and Godelieve Sones. George was born on March 9, 1941 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He met his wife and spent his life in Winnipeg raising his family and working at Canada Post. He spent many hours volunteering at Oxford Heights Community Club and Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association. He retired from the post office after more than 25 years of service in 1996. After his retirement, he filled his days with his family - especially playing with his grandchildren and granddogs, working at 200 Tuxedo, and volunteering at the Kiwanis. The family would like to thank the residents and employees of 200 Tuxedo for their cards, treats and prayers. We are also grateful to the nurses of the St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit for allowing Dad to remain at home for his final days. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 10, 2014 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children's Hospital or the Winnipeg Humane Society. • It was never hard to find George back in the days of Oxford Heights CC as he could always be found in the equipment shed doing something for the club. Many a story could be told but will now have to wait. Condolences to Beth and the family on the loss of their leader. - Posted by: Ray and Linda Donald (Friends from Transcona) on: Nov 10, 2014

  • Three words that describe my brother are kind, generous and hard working. George always was there to help out whether it was at the Oxford Heights Community Club when his kids were younger, volunteering at Kiwanis Courts or helping out his children and his grandchildren. George loved children and I'm so glad he had grandchildren to spoil even though it should have been for a much longer time. He always remembered my grandchildren's birthdays and I hope he knew how much I appreciated that. Everyone who had George in their life at some time was very lucky to have known such a special person. I wished I had spent much more time with him but unfortunately you don't realize this until it's too late. George, you will be missed by everyone who was lucky enough to know you. I love you George. • So sorry to hear of your loss. We never had the opportunity to meet George personally, but spending time with his family knew what a good man and loving dad and grandpa he was. He will be sorely missed but forever in your hearts. Leta and Darrell Noakes and family - Posted by: Darrell and Leta Noakes (Friends ) on: Nov 09, 2014

  • George was my "big brother". I always remember him being very afraid of doctors and especially needles. During the time of the '50 Flood he ran away from the doctor's office where my mom had taken him for his needle only to be chased down by my Dad who was on his bike and hauled back to the doctor's office. We always teased him about that. When he was old enough he loved to work on the Taillieu farm with his cousin, Garry, helping out his uncles. He never cared for school very much but would rather be out working a job. There was a time when he had three jobs just to support his family. His family came before anything else in his life. He hated being ill and not being able to be his active self. We will miss him greatly but know that he is in heaven with our Mom and Dad and other relatives and for that we are grateful. • I am so sorry to hear of your loss, Mr Sones (George) was a person that was a good friend of my family's and all the memories I will cherish! Since his second home in the day was at O.H.C.C with all the countless hours volunteering! Rest in peace, Cathy - Posted by: Cathy Pososki(lyons) (friend of Karen) on: Nov 07, 2014

  • George was one of the kindest people I had the opportunity to work with. He put others before himself and always looked for the good in people. I will remember him as always having an open ear for me and how he could make me laugh. Everyone here loved him and miss him. He was so proud of being called "grandpa". My only wish was that he would have had more time to spend with his family. Good-bye my friend - Posted by: Joanne Peitsch (Fellow worker) on: Nov 05, 2014

  • "One who knows how to show kindness from their heart, will be a friend better than any possession." This is how I remember George. Helping from his heart with his family, and others who were in need. I will miss him as a friend with a kind heart. He did miss his calling though, he would have been a great Bomber coach. My thoughts are with his wife Beth, and their family. - Posted by: Colleen (Friend, (and Fellow long suffering Bomber supporter.)) on: Nov 04, 2014

  • I grew up with George in Fort Garry; he lived very close to where we did so we spent many happy times at his place; his Mother would lace up our skates; give us chocolate chip or peanut butter cookies. I had season tickets with George to Blue Bomber games in our younger years. The one thing I will say about George is that he was such a caring individual, loved his family above all. He would bring his Mother to visit mine, and others when they were ill and would always keep in touch with his uncles. He will be missed by all of us and especially his family. - Posted by: Carole Armstrong-Swain (Cousin) on: Nov 04, 2014

  • It was always such a pleasure to work alongside George at activities at the Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts. He had such a good rapport with the residents and he could always make them laugh, although they all talked with him about serious stuff as well. He was a gift and he is not lost to us. My deepest sympathy to Beth and the rest of the family. Gone but not forgotten as long as I am able to remember. - Posted by: Barbara GrahamNorth (Fellow Volunteer) on: Nov 04, 2014
