Mom had been ill for the last five years and we are so very happy that Mom is no longer suffering. She is now with Dad who just passed away 10 weeks ago. They grew up in a little town in southern Italy, married, immigrated to Canada, they were the best of friends and worked together for their entire 70 years of marriage. We are so very proud to have been part of their wonderful story. Dearest Mom, may God bless you and Dad and we pray that you are once again reunited. With the passing of comare Teresa and previously of her husband compare Franco, I feel that another link to my past has been lost. For me and my family comare Teresa or comare Tiresina as we so affectionately referred to her was an important presence in our lives, a way for us to connect with our cultural roots and identity. When we arrived in Canada from Italy, she offered friendship and camaraderie at a time when we were trying to make sense of our reality and circumstances in a strange, complex and often times foreboding new environment. My memories are too numerous to share. But pieced together they give me great comfort and joy. They are also a reminder of how important family, friendship and kinship ties are vital in defining who we are, what we believe and how we relate to the broader community. To the Naccarato family and kin, my family (wife Anna, my parents Rocco and Vittoria, sister Cathy and her family) and I offer our condolences and thanks for constituting such an unforgettable part of our lives and for contributing to our sense of self worth and being.
