GIACOMO TORCHIA It is with sad and heavy hearts, that the Torchia Family announce the peaceful passing of Giacomo Torchia, at the age of 89, on Tuesday, November 4, 2014. Giacomo was born in Miglierina (Catanzaro), Italy on September 17, 1925, one of nine children, to Giacomo Torchia and Felicia Cappellano. He spent his childhood and earlier life journeys between his native Miglierina and Amato, learning and applying his skills successfully in the agricultural community and specifically as a shepherd. It was always fun learning and hearing his stories from his native birthplace. He also spent a brief working period in northern and central Italy (Bolzano) and (Roma) which he spoke fondly of. At the age of 14, with his three brothers gone to war and his father passing away, Giacomo had the weight of the world on his shoulders responsible to solely provide for his whole family. In 1950, he wed his lovely wife, Serafina Mazzei. In February 1959, he left behind his wife and kids to come to Winnipeg. Here he began to develop his roots in order to provide a better life for his family. In August 1963, he was reunited with his family in Canada. Giacomo worked various jobs upon arriving in Winnipeg and retired from the Misericordia Health Centre. Giacomo was a simple yet wise man, with an extremely sharp mind. He was a man of principal and lived his life with integrity. His generosity, work ethic and selflessness are all qualities that he will be remembered by. Some of his favourite hobbies and passions included: gardening, winemaking, and spending time with his neighbours and fellow community. The family has fond memories of all these activities and how they brought smiles to him. The greatest pleasure and joy was the love he had for his family. This is where he found his greatest joy. We will always remember the sparkle in his eyes and big smiles we would receive the minute you walked into his home or his back yard as he sat under his grapevines at peace with the world. Giacomo is survived by his loving and caring wife of 64 years Sarafina. He leaves his children, Agostino (Maria) and Felicia, grandchildren: James (Jody), Joseph (Costanza), Jonathan and Nicholas Torchia; Julian, Jennifer (Aaron) Reedel and his great-grandchildren, Nico and Sofia Torchia. As well his nephews and niece, Antonio, Giuseppe, and Vincenza Torchia who were always there for him and respected him more like a father figure. Also surviving him is his one sister, Angela in Italy and his many nieces and nephews in Canada and Italy. The family would like to acknowledge and extend a heartfelt thank you to all the home care workers. Pallbearers will be James, Joseph, Jonathan, and Nicholas Torchia, Jennifer Reedel, and Agostino Torchia. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, November 10 at 11:00 a.m. in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 510 River Avenue, with visitation one hour prior to the mass. Entombment will follow in the Queen of Heaven Mausoleum, 3990 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers please make donations to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or The Canadian Diabetes Association.
