GEORGE WILLIAM MANN August 31, 1916 - November 8, 2014 It is with sadness and loving memories we announce the peaceful passing of George William Mann (aged 98), Saturday November 8, 2014 at the Victoria General Hospital. He was surrounded by his adopted family and maintained his wonderful spirit and wit until the very end. George was a highly respected member of the community, always willing to lend a hand to those in need. Predeceasing him were his parents, Albert Alfred Mann and Edith Riley Mann, his wife Irene Mann (nee Holgate) and four siblings. He was a faithful member of Knox United Church and an affiliate of the St. Vital Masonic Lodge. George was born in Folkstone, England and came to Canada with his family at the age of three. They settled in Lake Francis and later moved to Winnipeg in 1927. George completed his schooling in Winnipeg and worked with Safeway until the outbreak of the Second World War. He enlisted with the Royal Air Force, after which he attended Queen's University for Radar training. Thereafter he was engaged in active service with the R.A.F. in England. George was attached to Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain and later transferred to Bomber Command until the conclusion of hostilities. He met Irene Holgate while stationed at Hunsdon and they were married in 1942. After the war George convinced Irene that Canada should be their future home and they moved to Winnipeg, where George started his longtime career with Dominion Electric. George and Irene spent their retirement years traveling to England, Europe and throughout North America. They became very interested in the development and building of Fred Douglas Place, where they moved to in 1989. George remained very active with the Fred Douglas Place Council for many years. Irene passed away in 1999 and despite this great loss, George was determined to carry on with his active life. He continued to enjoy his many friends and family and later met a very dear friend, Myrene Hodgson, and embraced her family as his own. Funeral Services will be held at Knox United Church on Sunday, November 16 at 2:00 p.m. A family interment will precede the funeral. He will be laid to rest beside his wife of 58 years at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. George is survived by many nieces and nephews in Canada and in England. Special thanks to the staff of Victoria General Hospital floors 3 and 4 and the caring residents of Fred Douglas Place and Riverwood Square. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, they can make a donation in George's memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
