JESSE ANDERS SHORT-GERSHMAN July 22, 1992 - October 29, 2014 We sadly announce the tragic passing of Jesse Short-Gershman aged 22, in Victoria, B.C. on Wednesday, October 29, 2014. Jesse is survived by his devoted mother Dr. Erin Short and partner Michael Marek and loving father Dr. Stu Gershman and partner Niki Green, grandparents George and Gloria Gershman, Dr. Frank and Doreen Short, uncles Dr. Darryl Gershman (Diane), Dr. Howard Short (Heather), aunt Shelley Gershman, seven cousins, and on his father's side, brothers Max and Zak, sister Ashley and 97 year old great- grandmother Lee Gerb. Jesse was a gifted child, and excelled at everything he attempted. He attended Cordova Bay Elementary, Royal Oak Middle, and Claremont High School graduating at age 15, winning the Governor General's Bronze Medal and 10 additional awards. He then entered the University of Victoria and graduated at age 19 winning the Governor General's Silver medal with an honors degree in Mathematics and Computer Science. He maintained an A+ average in almost all courses throughout his entire university training. Jesse was an excellent golfer and won seven trophies in Junior and Juvenile tournaments. He avidly participated in long distance cycling, hiking, water polo, swimming, camping and snorkeling. He was an excellent chess and scrabble player and an accomplished pianist and composed some original music. In 2012, he obtained an internship at the Google Corporation Main Campus in Mountainview, California (Silicon Valley), and at age 20 was employed there full time from July, 2013 until June, 2014. Jesse's only enemy on this earth was the challenge from his OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and severe depression. Unsuccessful treatment finally led to a definite end to his torturous suffering. Jesse spent many hours tutoring his peers in high school and university, and so he will be appropriately honored by a perpetual scholarship in Computer Science at the University of Victoria. Donations can be made by mail or in person (at any RBC Location) to the Jesse Short-Gershman Scholarship Fund at the Royal Bank of Canada Transit 8370, 3970 Shelbourne St., Victoria, B.C. V8N 3E2 or at any RBC Bank in Canada.

Condolences & Memories (13 entries)

  • To my precious grandson Jesse who was our first grandchild. I had a wonderful relationship with Jesse from the time he was born until the end of his life. We had many many wonderful times together (just the 2 of us, from golfing, going for walks, playing Scrabble, and just having wonderful talks together. After 8 years, I still think of him every day and miss him so much. I used to come to visit him from the day he was born from Winnipeg to Victoria approximately every 3 months. I loved him so much and miss him every day. I hope Jesse, that you are resting in peace. From your loving Nana - Posted by: DOREEN SHORT (GRANDMOTHER) on: Jul 22, 2022

  • Jesse was my only nephew and my kids' only male cousin. He was such a hard worker throughout his life - so smart and so amazingly gifted...my two children (ages 18 & 20) were always in awe of his determination and work ethic. I did not get to see him very often, but my last visit with him was a happy one and I will cherish that time even more now. His accomplishments in life were staggering for such a young man and he packed a lot of life into 22 years. You are forever in our hearts Jesse and you will be deeply missed by your family in California. Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Heather Short (Aunt ) on: Nov 19, 2014

  • What a sad end, to a life so gifted. Nobody truly knows the pain somebody endures suffering such a disease, myself included. It pains my heart to hear of such a loss. I am a mother, who also has a child who suffers from a mental illness. I cannot help but feel for all that loved him. Please know people do relate & do care. - Posted by: Someone who cares () on: Nov 17, 2014

  • Although you didn't grow up or live in Winnipeg or have much of a connection to the city the publishing of your obituary in the paper here is not in vain. If your struggle can save one person, then I know you will be happy and I know, finally, at peace. Miss you my friend.., - Posted by: Eva (Long distance friend) on: Nov 15, 2014

  • I was so touched to read this. Jesse sounds like the most amazing person and what a great loss to your family. I myself suffer from the grips of OCD and understand the pain that it causes. Even though I do not know you personally I felt compelled to send my sympathy. Thinking of you all at this time and may all the great memories flood your thoughts.
