H. DOROTHY MATTHIES (STEINGART) Sadly our family announces the passing of our mother and grandmother, at the age of 83, on November 3, 2014 at St. Boniface Hospital. Dorothy is survived by her children Linda (Ron) Plenert, Brian, David (Heather), Lori (Ray) Dennis, and Eric. She will also be missed by her grandchildren Jennifer (David), Kimberly (Jeremy), Erin (Shaka), Marina, Brennan, and Emma. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Helen Firmaniuk and Marlaina Stewartt. Dorothy was born on August 19, 1931 and lived all her life in Winnipeg. The family grew up in Windsor Park and she will be remembered by her children's friends for her welcoming nature. Dorothy worked for Winnipeg School Division #1 for many years, retiring in 1996. Just prior to her retirement, she moved into South Osborne Place where she was active with the library and committee work until her final days. Dorothy enjoyed a game of crokinole or shuffleboard whenever there was an opportunity. Her contributions and sense of humour will be missed by many in the building. Watching Jeopardy, musical programs, Bomber games, curling, women's hockey and the Jets were activities that brought much enjoyment. Dorothy was an avid Jets fan and thrilled that family made a point of getting her out to a couple of games every year. Dorothy grew weary of the cold Winnipeg winters but there were two things that made them bearable - taking any University of Winnipeg course taught by Karen Toole and listening to Boney M while baking Christmas treats for the holidays. Dorothy also loved reading, whatever the season, and was open to learning and growing as a person. This attitude was invaluable during recent years as she coped with various health issues. She took on these challenges with grace, never losing her generous smile or her feisty spirit and was an example to all on adapting to life's dilemmas. Dorothy was a loving mother and grandmother who always had time for others. Family held a very special place in her heart and it showed in the way she loved us with her patience, generosity, sense of humour and kind heart. We love you, Mum, you made a difference in the lives of us all. We're comforted to know your spirit will live on. In keeping with Dorothy's wishes, there will be no service - her family will gather for a private celebration of her life. Donations may be made in Dorothy's name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I apologise for not getting to you folk sooner. I just found Dorothy's obituary. I do want to tell you the feeling was mutual. Your Mom may have sought out my courses, but I very much appreciated her being part of them. Her attitude and intellect for the courses were both so insightful. We often shared a few words at the end of the class, but I don't think I ever knew her full name. I certainly will never forget her face and her presence. I did of course know of her diffiuclty in speaking, but she did not let that limit her participation in any way. Again, after class she would ask questions, offer comment, but more than anything else she radiated an affirmation of life's meaning. You are indeed blessed to have her as your momther, family center, and beloved. Be gentle with each other. And thank you for sharing her with me. - Posted by: Karen E.
