LLOYD M. DOLE July 19, 1955 November 9, 2014 The very embodiment of "hail fellow well met," Lloyd M. Dole, has departed this earthly realm on Sunday, November 9, 2014, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 59 years. Left to forever cherish Lloyd's memory are his brother, Roger; dear companion Judy; as well as loving "ex," Diane. He was predeceased by mother Connie and father Gordon. He also left behind a multitude of friends who are grieved at the thought they will never again share Lloyd's avid conversation, or his infectious love of good books, good music, good television and good movies. A short list: the St. James Supper Club; his Winnipeg Press Club pals; Lloyd's Winnipeg Sun coworkers; his softball and volleyball families; and the "Funky Five." Lloyd was technically born a West Kildonan lad, but became a staunch fixture of sunny St. James, evidently a match for his usually sunny disposition. He spent much of his life working in the media, specifically the Winnipeg Tribune and the Winnipeg Sun, where Lloyd's smarts and natural ebullience made a perfect fit among the more fun-loving ink-stained wretches. At the Sun, for example, when the late Lindor Reynolds decided to dress him up for a Boy George look-alike contest, Lloyd was, as usual, game for anything. Upon seeing the bathroom adjoining then-publisher Paul Robson's office, he would be the guy to cheekily inquire: "Publisher's clearing house?" Many of Lloyd's comrades will remember the infamous Thursday night get-togethers, watching Hill Street Blues or matching wits with him (usually unsuccessfully) over epic marathons of Trivial Pursuit on Planet Dorchester. Fond memories of gabbing over dinner or music on Moorgate, on Linwood, or on Wharton, or elsewhere will linger for many. We will also remember his devotion to his own pets, and Lloyd's connection with all manner of cats and dogs was truly amazing. Lloyd took great satisfaction in supporting unfortunate or disadvantaged animals. He will long be remembered for his unfailing loyalty, generous heart, quick smile, and his capacity to share his passions with his friends. Lloyd's memory will be celebrated on the afternoon of Thursday, November 27, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the Royal Canadian Legion, St. James No. 4, 1755 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Craig Street Cats, 89 Madison Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3J 1J2. From the days on Garry Street Lloyd was just a happy go lucky guy. dedicated, keeping us Suits on our toes, so he could dummy the paper on time. I knew Lloyd since the inception of the Sun. While the early years were all about launching a new newspaper, it was Lloyd s contribution that helped make everyone work in unison. To have attended your service this week was very difficult. Just once in a blue moon you meet someone fun, and funny, yet dedicated and proud of his work . To see your world on a screen after all these years well, Lloyd I have to say, you were loved by all..the ten years spent at the Winnipeg Sun were some of the best years. You would have loved your memorial service. Nite Lloyd. - Posted by: Laurie Gydé (Sun coworker) on: Nov 29, 2014

I recall Thursday nights at Planet Dorchester, frisbee-golf at Dorothy Lake, my sister and I cramming in to the passenger seat in the Bee, flipping through bins of vinyl, and so many more pleasant times shared. I will miss this vibrant, interesting, clever, witty, thoughtful, kind, and overall fine gentleman. Our world is dimmer without his light. - Posted by: Sally Hewson (Friend) on: Nov 26, 2014

As mentioned above and number people on the Facebook PM, I remember Lloyd as one of, if not, thee, friendliest and funniest people I have had the honour to meet. Of course, there was the watching the Hill Street Blues gang in Winnipeg and playing Frisbee Golf on the occasional May Long Weekend somewhere out near the Winnipeg River in the Whiteshell :) Rest in Peace and I know that Heaven just got a lot better :) Cheers, Jack Simpson - Posted by: Jack Simpson (Friend ) on: Nov 24, 2014

I met Lloyd back in the late 70's, when I started off my publishing career at The Winnipeg Tribune. I still see him in my mind, coming through the side door, carrying envelopes and wearing a denim shirt :). What I remember about Lloyd is that he was always smiling and never seemed to EVER have a bad day! He was so patient in a position that definitely required it. I later met up with him when I worked at Trade and Commerce magazine, in The Winnipeg Sun building. There, he still carried that same smile and attitude. Such a nice individual... I knew Diane from the Trib days as well and I am passing along sincere sympathies to her, as well as to Lloyd's family members and friends. - Posted by: Lynn Menzies (former Winnipeg Tribune co worker) on: Nov 24, 2014

Lloyd, my heart breaks that I will never see you again, or be party to your warm smile, your mighty laugh, your quick wit and sarcasm, and passionate enthusiasm. You were one of a kind! Lloyd and I and Lynne Carter McKenzie and Jim Bais spent many a lunch time at my house dining on Fettuccine Alfredo and wine. Other times were spent at Lloyd's gatherings, on the field, or at a Winnipeg Sun event. He gave the greatest hugs and when he called you friend you knew it came from the heart. I wish I could have told you one more time what an effect you had on me and how much I cared for you. Rest in peace Lloyd. I hope we'll meet again. I worked with Lloyd at 290 Garry St. It was the beginnings of the Winnipeg Sun. He taught me the craft of creating a newspaper dummy (the best part of our day) and how to steal a page or two from the sports section when we needed to. He introduced me to his favorite old and current rock and roll/various other genres of music. Who could know that there was so much to learn? His favorites at the time: Dexi's Midnight Runners, Ann and Kate McGarrigal. It was clear to us, his profound loyalty to his favorite Hill Street Blues at 9:00. This gave reason for a faithful gathering every Thursday night on "Planet Dorchester." Lloyd, thank you for making a difference in this world. On behalf of the T-Ball Champs, we send our condolences to family and friends. We met Lloyd 10 years ago as well on the "field". He always had a smile on his face and when we were the team in the dug out by 1st base, he always engaged us in conversation! We hope you are now at peace! - Posted by: Connie Scerbo () on: Nov 20, 2014

I was invited to join a baseball team about ten years ago and it happened to be filled with wonderful people. One of them of course being Lloyd. He was one of the first to say hello and extend his hand in friendship. We hit it off immediately. Over the years I heard many stories about the "Sun", "baseball", and "movies", in that order. Intelligent, articulate, and always willing to join in a conversation. I much enjoyed getting to know Lloyd. The last couple of years we enjoyed many dinners together chatting about our lives and families. Rest in peace my friend, you will be missed, but most importantly, remembered. - Posted by: Jeffrey West (Friend) on: Nov 19, 2014
