JOCELYN BRENNER Peacefully, on Thursday, November 13, our mother, Jocy passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 89. She was predeceased by her husband Sid and son Ronnie. Jocy will be deeply missed by her son Gary (Kate), daughter Betty (David), grandchildren Taryn (Tyler), Sidney and Samantha, her brother-in-law Abe, her nephews, nieces and her many friends. Jocy, the youngest of three girls was born and raised in the north end of Winnipeg where she met and married her childhood sweetheart Sid. They were inseparable from the start and were together for 40 years until his premature passing in 1986. Their love and devotion to each other was always there in good times and bad. They created a household filled with music, movies, interesting conversation and laughter which was always enhanced by the great food that came out of the kitchen. Our mother never knew how many people were coming for dinner but all were greeted with her warmth and ever-present smile. Her interests were varied and although she particularly loved the ballet, opera and symphony, she was also a huge baseball fan. When the Beatles hit the stage in America in 1964, it was Jocy who said "wow, they're great". Although she never had the opportunity to attend university, she was well educated on many subjects primarily by her love of the written word. She was a voracious reader of books of all types and was a member of a book club most all her life. She was also a long time member of Hadassah and was president of her chapter. In later years she took a number of courses at the University of Winnipeg and loved to play bridge at least twice a week. She also was involved and enjoyed the adult leisure program at the synagogue. The word friend was a very important one to our mother. She had long, strong friendships that lasted literally from childhood to the present day. Her kindness and welcoming nature was worn on her sleeve and was evident to all who knew her. Her true love and passion was her family and that extended to her nieces and nephews as well. She was always interested to know how everyone was doing and took great pleasure in our successes. We will miss her "one-liners" always delivered when we least expected it. We will always have her with us in our hearts and minds. Funeral services were held at the Shaarey Zedek synagogue on Sunday, November 16. Pallbearers were Joseph Diner, Merrill Shulman, Dr. David Rusen, Dr. Richard Diner, Tyler Engel and Sidney Secter. If one wishes, donations in her memory can be made to the Shaarey Zedek Adult Leisure Fund.
