OLGA ROMANCE (nee FURDA) April 30, 1923 - November 14, 2014 We announce the passing of our dear loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a great-great-grandmother in the early evening hour on Friday, November 14 at the Holy Family Home at 91 and half years. She was a resident of the home for 12 years until her passing. She was an employee for a number of years in the late 1970s into early 1980s. A milestone happened in the Romance history on March 3, 2014 where five generations were observed, Olga, Rose, Wendell, Amada and Savannah were pictured together. Mom was born in western Ukraine to Antoni and Paraskewja Furda. At seven years old, she immigrated to Canada together with her parents, her younger sister, Pearl, and youngest brother Adolf in June 1930 in Halifax, NS. They settled on a homestead in the Interlake region 1 and a half west of the Silver village #7 Hwy on Skylake Road. She married Michael (Mike) on November 23, 1940 in St. John's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Silver. In their early marriage years they worked a short time in Winnipeg and after on a farm in the Altona, MB area where her oldest son Henry was born. In 1944 they moved to the "Romance" pioneered (1913) family homestead farm three miles South West of Arborg living there until 1968 when they moved to Winnipeg. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Michael (October 1999), his six brothers and two sisters and their spouses, except one sister-in-law by marriage, Lena Melnychuk, her father Antoni (June 1976), mother Paraskewja (June 1949), stepmother Anastasia (November 1986), her two stepbrothers, Andrew and Walter Furda in mid 1970s in Toronto, ON, infant daughter Jeanette (1945), two grandchildren Tabitha and Elizabeth (1983), niece Sonya Furda, nephew Wayne Leschyshyn (June 1977), also his two older brothers, Leonard (August 1985) and Allan (April 2011). She worked hard every summer on the large vegetable weedless garden. The result was fresh veggies on the table in every meal. She was an excellent cook, cooking delicious food from scratch. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • My heart and prayers are with the family for your loss. I remember when Baba first met me..... Her son told her I was with him, not just child care.... She turned and looked at me and said ...Are you crazy?! hahaha..she then said oh my oh my.... Later when we went for a walk and we were talking...she said ..now what should you call me...just then a lady she knew stopped to say hello ..they talked in Ukrainian and when she left......Baba looked at me and said...you will call me Baba..that's it, Baba. And you are coming to church with me.... So that was settled. When we would come to visit she always had yummy homemade food for us to take home...because I was young Baba would tell me in detail how to heat this food...(days before microwave).. When she found out I could cook she looked at me and smiled and said ..hmmmm you are not taking the meatballs home hahahaha...so many loving memories...and the yummy slush at Ukrainian Christmas Baba made. And she always surprised us women..when the men were talking after our very delicious Christmas meal..Baba would bring out a yummy liqueur for us to try and she would say...this is for us, the men don't need this.... And the same with a wonderful box of chocolates. I don't want to say ex mother-in-law...Olga and Mike Romance were my in-laws and they were loved very much. My children and I will always love and treasure Baba's memory. - Posted by: Annette Dupras (ex daughter in law) on: Nov 19, 2014
