DR. ROBERT JAMES HAY We are deeply sorry to announce the death of Rob Hay on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. in Sun City Center, Florida. A bright, talented individual who will be forever missed by all those who knew him. He leaves behind a large family, including the love of his life, Ann (Belyea), daughters Kathryn and Colette and son-in-law Dzeni, his sister Iva J. (Hay) Yeo, brother-in-law Archie Yeo and family, sister-in-law, Millie McInnes and family, and sister-in-law May (Belyea) Johnson and family. Rob was born in Winnipeg where he attended Grosvenor, Robert H. Smith and Kelvin High Schools. He studied Science at the University of Manitoba before receiving his PhD in Biochemistry in Scotland. He settled in the United States to continue with his passion for science. He made numerous scientific contributions, not the least of which was the discovery of how to grow liver cells outside the human body. Swimming, aquariums full of tropical fish, travel and humour were some of the highlights in his life. But his greatest joy was the time he spent with his wife, two daughters and son-in law. Rob also enjoyed his involvement with music including at St. Georges Anglican Church where he was a choir boy for several years. While at Kelvin High School he and his friends thoroughly enjoyed performing in Gilbert and Sullivan's "the Mikado". Rob and Ann spent years enjoying life in the United States and treasured their many visits back to Canada. Rob was predeceased by his father Dr. A.W.S. Hay, mother Mrs. Mary Irene Hay, older brother Dr. Bill Hay, and niece Karen Hay.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • My life touched those of both Ann and Robin ( as we called him then) at a very early age. Ann was a classmate from grade 1 at Qeenston School, I believe. Rob was a neighbour across Oxford Street, and a team mate on one of the best relay swim teams around, for years, in River Heights and Robert H Smith. I recall both Ann and Rob with real affection, and wonderful memories. Ann, to you my condolences, and warmest regards. Richard Kroft - Posted by: Richard Kroft (Friend) on: Jan 17, 2015

  • He taught me so much about loving and appreciating life, sharing of yourself and being there for others, and following your passions. Love you and will miss you terribly, Dad. - Posted by: Kathryn (daughter) on: Nov 27, 2014

  • Uncle Rob was an amazingly kind person and uncle. When I was fourteen he took me to the research lab and helped me dissect a hamster. The love of anatomy and science he bestowed upon me baked me to go into research and medicine. I would meet him at scientific meetings- which was a cool honor. Will miss you Uncle Rob- I am who I am because of you. And I know you touched other people all over the world in a similar manner. - Posted by: Sigrid Johnson (Niece ) on: Nov 22, 2014

  • Rob was an extraordinary man! Outstanding in his scientific profession; a wonderful son, brother; and in-law...a loving husband, and father...and a true friend! His, was a life well-lived. We will always remember his intellect, his curiosity, his generosity, his sense of humor...his gentle kindness and his sweet and dear love for Ann and his girls. We will always cherish the years we shared as friends, and we will miss him. - Posted by: Kathryn Faith-Greene (Friend) on: Nov 22, 2014
