ALFRED ROGER DAHER Peacefully, on Thursday morning, November 20, 2014, my father, Alfred Daher, passed away by my side at Riverview Centre. Our family is very thankful that he was not in pain and that he received the best of care. My dad was predeceased by his parents Theodor and Katie Daher, his beloved wife Erna and his brother Teddy. Dad is survived by Erna's children Debbie (Darrin) Scanlan and Anita (Gary) Marino and grandchildren Ryan, Ashley and Jenna. Besides myself, Michael, his only child, my Dad is survived by my mother Margaret, his brother Jim (Sharon) and family and his sister Sylvia Gurniak and family. My Dad was born on June 30, 1937 in Hearst, ON. He was raised in Winnipeg's north end and attended Cecil Rhodes, Brooklands, Faraday, Isaac Newton and Red River College. After his marriage to my mother, they moved to Sept-Iles, PQ, where my Dad worked at the airport for Transport Canada. It was there that I was born. Eventually we moved to Winnipeg and in 1965 my dad joined the Winnipeg Police Service. In 1993, my Dad married his sweetheart Erna. In 1999 he retired as Detective Sergeant. Until recently, he maintained his friendship with his Police buddies at the "Pay Day Breakfasts". He also met with his North End school chums at the Sals on Tuesdays. I will treasure the memories he shared of the deer hunting trips that his father, my grampa, took with my Dad and my Dad's brother Jim. Those trips eventually became my Dad and I, Uncle Jim, Jamie, Kevin and Jeff. I'm grateful to my Dad for introducing me to the classical guitar, which became my life's journey. It was also during those years when my father, mother and I took yearly road trips to Texas, California and Mexico. For over 20 years, both my Dad and I made annual ski trips to Big Sky, Montana where we enjoyed skiing the mountains with his brother Teddy and my cousin Gary (Christine) as well as friends on the Mike Mogul Ski Team. As the years passed, Arizona became a winter home for my Dad and Erna where they enjoyed retirement with his brothers and sister. While there, he enjoyed hiking in the mountains with his sister Sylvia. They even made a trip to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Over the last 20 years, my Dad cherished his family with Erna and stepdaughters, Anita and Debbie and his grand- children, Ryan, Ashley and Jenna. Spending time with his "best buddy" Ashley on Friday afternoons was the highlight of his week. My Dad was an avid reader all of his life. His perfect eyesight allowed him to read up until a few weeks ago. His eyes have been donated to the Eye Bank and now two more people will be able to enjoy the gift of sight. In the last few weeks he often told me he had a great life with no regrets! Dad, you were my hero and best friend. "Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite, tonight." In accordance with my Dad's wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. Donations in my Dad's memory may be sent to the Salvation Army.

Condolences & Memories (17 entries)

  • We were neighbours of the Daher’s when I was a kid growing up on Oakmont Avenue in Winnipeg. I grew up playing with Michael and often talked with Alf (I called him Mr. Daher) We were considered poor as my mom was raising a family as a single mother. Alfred was very nice to us and he inspired me to become a policeman when I grew up, which I did. He was a remarkable man that our whole family respected and liked very much - Posted by: Cecil W. • I was deeply saddened to get the Veterans Association Newsletter and learn of ALFIE'S passing. I had the pleasure of working with him on numerous occasions and he was a true asset to every investigation in which he participated. Deepest condolences to family. - Posted by: Garry LEACH (Co-worker - WPS) on: Feb 12, 2015

  • Condolences to the Daher family from my family. I remember as a child Alf's sense of humor and what I would say seemed like a twinkle in his eye. Probably because he was up to something. I always thought it was cool to have a cop as a cousin. Distances can separate us Michael but family love and support knows no barriers. Take care. - Posted by: Kelly Scheer (Cousin) on: Nov 24, 2014

  • I was very saddened to hear of Alfie's passing. Rest in peace my friend and mentor. The bookmakers in Heaven will shudder at the mere mention of your name. - Posted by: Jim Dzikowski (Friend and co-worker) on: Nov 23, 2014

  • Sorry to see the obituary. Alfie was my late husband, Dewight's, partner in detectives about the time he married Erna. Of all the partners a police officer encounters over the years, Alfie definitely stood out, visited our home, and met our children. Between the two of them, they were so pleasant to deal with on the job that even hardened criminals would rat out their friends to help them. - Posted by: Roberta Beach (family friend) on: Nov 23, 2014

  • I worked on the same shift with Alfie in the Vice Division..in the late 70s..he was a great guy-lots of fun-we kicked in a lot of doors, locked up some bad guys, and toasted our successes.. He was a real cop and a good person. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Jack Tinsley (Friend and co-worker) on: Nov 23, 2014
