Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALPHONSO WEEKES It is with sadness that we, the family announce the passing of Alphonso Weekes at the age of 90, on November 22, 2014. Most that knew Alphonso will remember him as a strong ambitious character that had many good years and a good life. He is survived by his wife Sybil , his sons Tyrone (wife Joan) and Tony (wife Mary), his daughters Diana (husband Laurie) and Marcia, his grandchildren David (wife Monique) and Katrina, and his great-grandson James. Al started out in Barbados where he received his diploma in History and Analysis of Music at the Chicago Conservatory. He loved the clarinet and played with the Royal Barbados Police Band as the solo clarinet. He also played solo clarinet in the American Colony Band in Aruba and the Aruba Symphony orchestra. In 1963 he joined the Canadian Legion Band as solo clarinet and played principal clarinet in the Sea Cadets Band where he was promoted to sub-lieutenant. He also played in the Brandon Symphony orchestra. At work he began at the Lago Oil and Transport Company in Aruba where he broke the Netherlands Shorthand Speed record of 160 words per minute when he completed the test at 180 words per minute (a record that was in the Guinness book of world records at one time). He was chief court reporter in Barbados when he was appointed official court reporter to the Court of Queen's bench for Brandon, Manitoba. After retiring in 1991 he received the Province of Manitoba Meritorious Service Award. He was an avid tennis player who continued to be very active into his late 70s often demonstrating how he could still jump the net. He and his wife visited Clear Lake often and had many friends at the lake and in Brandon. Recently they moved to Winnipeg and have been living there close to other family members. Our sincere thanks to the staff at Parkview Place for their friendship and care at this difficult time in his life. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 27, 2014 at St. Timothy's Church, 135 John Forsythe Road, Winnipeg, with interment to follow after the service and reception. We met the Weekes family many years ago when Al was playing in the Legion band in Brandonwith our father, Horace. They would all come over as a family to our home for coffee or sometimes something stronger; all types of different things were discussed between the parents and all of the kids would just talk and play. Mr.Weekes and my dad Horace were both very strong-willed men and sometimes it would get a little loud. My mother Ruth and Mrs. Weekes would step in and calm it down. Thank you so much for being part of our family for all those years; we all had many a laugh. Our sincere condolences on the loss of your husband, father and our friend Alphonso at this time. The thing I remember most about Al was his optimistic, upbeat and sincere interest in life. Whether it be world affairs, general news or tennis, Al always had an opinion expressed in an energetic and engaging manner. I will remember Al for being a real family man, a good neighbour and tennis friend, always quick with a compliment, who had a lifelong love of tennis and was an excellent player. - Posted by: David Wilken (Friend of the family) on: Nov 25, 2014
