DOROTHY CAIRNS (MCCULLOCH)
Born: Mar 08, 1924
Date of Passing: Nov 20, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOROTHY CAIRNS (nee MCCULLOCH) March 8, 1924 - November 20, 2014 Although with heavy hearts but grateful for her long and happy life, the family announces the peaceful passing of Dorothy Cairns on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at the Rosewood in Winnipeg. Mom was predeceased by her best friend and husband of 63 years, "Elmie" in 2011, parents John and Nance McCulloch, brother Jack McCulloch, and sister Joyce Brooker. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Dorell (Art) Schulz and granddaughter Dayna; son Bradley (Deb) and granddaughters Averi and Kiana; sisters-in-law Noreen and Inez Cairns, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. We would like to acknowledge Kevin Brooker and Ron and Betty-Anne McCulloch who held a special place in Mom's heart and have been devoted in their support to her over the years. Mom was born in Portage la Prairie, MB and was the youngest of three children. There she spent her childhood and after moving to Winnipeg to further pursue her schooling, she met, fell in love and married her beloved husband Elmer on May 14, 1948. They shared a wonderful life together and had many opportunities to travel the world during Dad's contract with the C.N.R. in Zambia, Africa. For many years they enjoyed winters away in Corpus Christi, TX and Palm Springs, CA. Mom's greatest treasures were her grandchildren. She spent many vacations enjoying her special time with them, countless hours in ballparks, hockey arenas, gyms, bowling alleys, and concert halls. She was their biggest fan and could always be heard saying with pride "that's my granddaughter"! Mom and Dad loved to golf and spent many a year on the golf course, in early years as members at the Canoe Club and finally Niakwa Country Club where they eventually retired from golf as life members. Mom also loved to play cards and was in many bridge clubs over the years. She loved sitting at the dining room table after dinner, engaged with the grandchildren in a good game of Crib, Hearts or Rummoli. But Mom's passion was her music and she would love to reminisce and tell us all about her high school operettas. She was a member of the St. Vital and Windsor Park United churches where she was so pleased to be a valued member of their respective choirs. Singing at weddings and the like was also such an enjoyment for her. While living at Dakota House in later years, her love of music took her to participate in song with the "Dakota Dazzlers" Choir. Mom always liked to write poetry. Her family could always look forward to a poem carefully and lovingly written for every special occasion, always ending with a "Take care, God bless!" We will deeply miss those words of love and encouragement. We are thankful for all the support given to Mom and our family especially over the last six months when things had been so difficult for her. We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge and extend heartfelt thanks to Roxanne, Diane and very "special companions" Buena and Ana at the Rosewood. We will be forever grateful for their special care and kindness to our mother. In keeping with Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday, November 26 at 2:00 p.m. in Windsor Park United Church, 1062 Autumnwood Drive. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200-6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3. I am so sorry to hear of your Mom and Grandma's passing. She was a very kind and caring woman, always putting everyone else before herself. She will be missed greatly. I enjoyed getting to know her from Dakota House, visiting her at the Rosewood and the hospital. I enjoyed listening to her stories as she cherished her family dearly. She is now at peace, no more pain and with her husband forever. God Bless all of you during this difficult time. Dolores - Posted by: Dolores Harris (Friend) on: Nov 30, 2014

When we moved to Fernleaf Drive in St. Vital in 1977 we really hit the jackpot; Dorothy and Elmer were our next door neighbors. When our children were born in the early 1980's, Dorothy and Elmer became their surrogate Grandparents. What excellent role models they were to us all. Our sincerest sympathy to Dorell and Brad and their families. - Posted by: Blair, Candy, Ainsley and Troy Heaps (friends and former neighbors) on: Nov 30, 2014

We were saddened to learn of Aunt Dorothy's passing but know that after a long and happy life she is at peace. I have fond memories of the week-ends I spent with Uncle Elmer and Aunt Dorothy at their home in Windsor Park, escaping the WGH nurses' residence and of their kindness to me. We are thinking of you, Dorell, Brad and families and sorry we can't be there with you today. With our sincere sympathy, Love, Pat, Earl and family - Posted by: Pat and Earl Ray and family, (niece) on: Nov 26, 2014

Dorothy always attended the Alloys Alumni luncheons. She was not able to come this fall. It was decided that we would send her one of the lovely centre pieces that we had on the tables. She was so appreciative of the fact that we thought to do that for her. The Alloy member who dropped it off went again to visit her after that. Upon visiting again, she immediately mentioned again how much it meant to her. She showed her the thank you cards she was working on just trying to find the right words express her appreciation. So thoughtful even when she really wasn't feeling well. We hope she is singing while playing golf or cards with her beloved husband Elmer right now. Our sympathy to her family & friends. She will be missed at Niakwa Golf & Country Club. - Posted by: Niakwa Alloys (Fellow members of Niakwa Country Club) on: Nov 25, 2014
