KNUD MARKMANN Ending a full life, our father passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2014 at age 94. Knud leaves to cherish his memory, his children: John and Edie, Karen and Paul, Marg, Helene and Jim and Anni and Daivid; special nephew, Donald and Eileen and family; 11 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren, extended family members in Denmark, and many dear friends and acquaintances in Canada. Papa was predeceased by Inge, his best friend and wife of 68 years, in July 2014. Knud was born in Pedersker on the Island of Bornholm in Denmark to Asta and Kristian on November 12, 1920. Papa met Mom on a train they were both travelling on between Nexoe and Roenne. After a short engagement, they were married on April 10, 1946. Knud and Inge immigrated to Canada in 1951 with three young children. Later on they added two more children: "made in Canada with Danish parts". Papa was proud that since arriving in Canada, he always had work and could provide for his family. He even started his own iron work business to have additional income so Inge could stay home and raise the children. After Papa retired from CN Rail in 1982, they travelled "home" to Denmark every other year, the last time in 2009 with Anni and Karen. They enjoyed their yearly trips to British Columbia to visit Karen, Marg, and Helene and friends. Our Papa loved to travel on the train and via car (slower pace and could see the many sights; it wasn't just the destination, it was the journey that he enjoyed too). Our parents were proud of their Danish heritage and volunteered many hours at the Scandinavian Pavilion during Folklorama. And of course the Scandinavian Cultural Centre on Erin Street and earlier on Young Street: Papa called Bingo, counted money, cleaned, helped with renovations and maintenance, and sang in the Choir. They met so many people over the years and made friends with many of them - not just the Danes, but also from the other Nordic nations. Papa was a proud Stamp Collector: of course, stamps of Denmark, but also the other Scandinavian countries and some Canadian. He entered many stamp exhibitions and was proud of his numerous awards. Papa and Mom were always active: gardening, tenting, walking, taking up cross country skiing in their 50s and started curling at the Victoria Curling Club (Danish Curling Club Sunday mornings) in their 60s. Papa was known as a food critic (nothing was as good as Mom's) and a beer critic (cool but not cold!), so we have all learned how to make the boiled potatoes and gravy just right and serve his beer at the correct temperature! Papa's mobility began to decline in January 2012 after suffering a mini stroke, but he remained active and walked daily, although less after they moved to Devonshire II in Transcona. Papa was moved to a personal care home in April 2014 and his health continued to decline. He died peacefully the morning of Sunday, November 23 2014. A Celebration of Knud's Life will be held on Friday, December 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the Scandinavian Cultural Centre, 764 Erin Street. As per Papa's wishes, after the celebration ceremony, we will enjoy Open-Faced Danish Sandwiches, Beer and Akvavit. To ensure we have ample delectable sandwiches and desserts, please confirm your attendance by leaving a message at 204-981-6529. The family would like to thank the many home care personnel for their help over the past year and special thanks to April and Lena of Devonshire House II and the Parkview Place staff (Marilou and Val) for their care and compassion. If desired, donations in Knud's memory may be made to the Scandinavian Cultural Centre, 764 Erin St., Winnipeg, MB R3G 2W4, or charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I am writing for my father who wishes to send his condolences to the family. My father Ove Skovgaard and my mother Herdis Skovgaard were good friends of your parents many years ago. I spent a few moments reminiscing with my father the good times they shared when both families were young and growing. He would have enjoyed going to the life celebration. - Posted by: Marian Gardiner () on: Dec 19, 2014

  • There were countless times that I was paired with Knud to be his "helper" in the Blacksmith or "Forge" Shop at the CN Transcona Shops. I always enjoyed the times when Knud and I were paired together to either repair and / or fabricate pieces and parts for the locomotives and various other rail cars. I also remember the good times and camaraderie that Knud had with two other Danes in the shop: Martin Svenningsen and Thune Jensen. Knud was always quick to lend a hand to anyone in the shop who needed help, or advice, with their appointed tasks. Knud was very skilled in his craft, and thus, it was a pleasure to watch, and, many times, help him create something out of nothing. Knud was always very good to me, and I told him when he retired that I'd never forget him...and the same holds true in his passing...I'll always remember Knud Markmann. Cheers to a great man! - Posted by: Monte Rowe (Former co-worker (Blacksmith Helper), at CN Transcona, from 1975 to Knud's retirement (1982)) on: Dec 12, 2014

  • John, Margret, Karen, I am very sorry for your loss. I have only very vague recollections of seeing your parents so long ago. They certainly lived a full life and raised some wonderful children - Posted by: Barry Malowanchuk (School Friend of Children) on: Nov 30, 2014
