MAGGIE (MARGARET) RAYTER (nee COUBROUGH) May 30, 1942 - November 22, 2014 Maggie passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, November 22, 2014, aged 72 years. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Barry Rayter; children Jason, Kelly, and Scott; brother David Coubrough and sister-in-law Marilyn; sisters and brothers-in-law Sharon and Benson Labinsky, Bailey and Karen Rayter, Mark Rayter, Ian Rayter and Lynnie Rappaport, and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Maggie was born to Charles and Jessie Coubrough in Winnipeg and raised in Pine Falls, Manitoba. She moved to Winnipeg in the early 1960s and trained as a RN at the General, as it was known then, and she went on to work for 35 years on the IV team at the Health Sciences Centre, making many lifelong friends with whom she still met regularly for group lunches. Maggie was involved in many causes and organizations, most notably Jewish Women International (she was a lifelong member of B'nai Brith Women, Aviva Chapter and Nadir Chapter, and served as past president and treasurer), the Women's Canadian Club of Winnipeg (Treasurer), and Act To End Violence Against Women and Alpha House Women's Shelter. She also served on the board of Seven Oaks General Hospital for seven years and was a life member at the Wellness Institute, which she was instrumental in establishing. She was recognized on numerous occasions for her work, including her contributions to Mount Carmel Clinic and Operation Stork and the Tay Sachs Disease project. She received the Operation Lifestyle Award from the Canadian Government and met with then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. As a volunteer, Maggie offered her dedication, her knowledge, skills and acumen (as a bookkeeper for example); as a friend, she offered her support, generosity, humour, and advice. Everybody was Maggie's "very best friend" and the circle of people in her life was expansive. From the "girls" she bowled, lunched, theatred and dinnered with for over four decades to more recent travel companions to Europe, people were drawn to Maggie because of her warmth, her curiosity, her laugh, and pleasure she took in other people's company. Maggie was also fiercely independent and cherished the time she spent alone, reading, and out at her favourite place, Victoria Beach. Maggie grew up there as a girl, spent the summers there with Barry and her children, and could never wait to get away for some quiet time on her own or with her family. Maggie faced a number of health challenges in the past years, including breast cancer, resultant lymphedema in her arm, and most recently a broken shoulder and arm. Maggie didn't complain about her condition or the pain she was in, and she strongly believed she would get better soon and resume her work in the community, her travels, and her active social life. Maggie was so very proud of her children's accomplishments and took great pleasure in hearing about the new things they were doing in their lives - plays they were seeing, books they were reading, places they were travelling. And they knew their mom was always there for them, to listen to them, help out with advice or support, and it meant a great deal for Maggie to be included in their lives. Maggie was a great presence in so many people's lives, and her loss is a shock for those who knew and loved her. Donations to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice. Services are to be held on Thursday, November 27, 2:00 p.m., Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. • I met Maggie through her sister-in-law. She was a reader of good books which she shared and I managed to be part of that share. I am thankful for being part of her life when asked to do housekeeping for her family. Maggie always said hello with a wee chat whenever we met. She was a special lady. I am sorry that I won't be able to attend the service today as I volunteer for seniors and have to take one to an appointment today. Barry and family I am so sorry for your loss sincerely.
