ELVA ANN MILLER December 15, 1916 - November 23, 2014 With many wonderful memories, we say good-bye to Elva Ann Miller (nee Harrison) of Starbuck, Manitoba, who passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2014, at the age of 97 years. Elva was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She lived a long, wonderful life and brightened the world with her kindness, sweetness and loving heart. A sharp wit, a wonderful sense of humour and genuine caring for others endeared her to everyone who knew her. Elva is survived by her sons Glen (Carole) and Gary (Winnie). She leaves behind the loves of her life, her grandchildren Jodi (Dean), Greg (Shannon) and Adam (Angie), along with six great-grandchildren - Taylor, Jordan, Maya, William, Kaitlyn and baby Claire. She absolutely treasured her grandchildren and happily watched them grow up. She also loved following all the activities of her great-grandchildren. All the kids loved their little Grammie and she loved them. Elva will be missed by many nieces and nephews who all thought very highly of their Auntie Elva. She will be sadly missed by her close sisters-in-law, Phyllis Harrison and Irene Miller. Elva was predeceased by her husband Leonard in 2013; brother Harold in 2002; brother Roy in 1989; father Wes Harrison in 1986, and mother Elizabeth in 1968. Elva was born in Carman, Manitoba, on December 15, 1916. She met Len while attending high school in the 1930s in Starbuck, where her parents ran the General Store. Len and Elva were married in 1943 in Belmont, Manitoba. They started their life together on the Ben Fetterman farm, near Starbuck, that was established in 1907. They raised their two boys on the river place and lived the farm life for over 60 years with wonderful neighbours and many long-time friends in and around Starbuck. Elva was an active member of the Starbuck United Church, the Order of the Eastern Star and a strong supporter of local community activities, along with being a lifetime member of the Starbuck Ladies Curling Club. Recounting curling stories and watching curling on TV were popular pastimes of Elva's, along with recalling fun memories of spending 19 years wintering in Mesa, Arizona, with their wonderful friends, Jessie and Walter Schade. After 60 years, Len and Elva moved off the farm and spent the last few years at Sterling House in Winnipeg. Elva was very thankful for all the new friendships she established at Sterling House. Elva, Mom, Little Grammie touched many lives in her special way and the memory of her will always be with us. The family wishes to extend a special thank-you to Dr. Permack for his caring and care during the last few months. A service celebrating Elva's life will be held on Monday, December 1, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., at Thomson In the Park' Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., Winnipeg, Manitoba. Pastor Ron Vert will officiate. Coffee reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to a children's charity of your choice. Mom would like that.

  • Sincere condolences to the family -- wish we could be present to participate in the celebration of Aunt Elva's life -- we are comforted knowing that we a great visit and lunch with her last year. I have many beautiful memories of Aunt Elva --- I remember attending their wedding in Belmont. And then, the excitement surrounding the birth of her first child --- Gramma Harrison woke me up very early on August 3 to let me know that "Elva had a baby boy" (Glen had arrived) and in later years, family gatherings at the Miller farm as well as in Belmont. I am grateful for all the significant genealogy information Aunt Elva provided thus facilitating work on the Harrison Family Tree. We will miss those arresting blue eyes and warm smiles. Take comfort in knowing it was a full life well lived! Keith & Liz Harrison - Posted by: Keith and Liz Harrison (nephew) on: Dec 01, 2014

  • Grammie was a special lady. She was always warm and cheerful, and made us feel like part of the family. I especially remember how she and Len came out for dinner with me while I was in Winnipeg on my own one time - I had a great time, and Grammie was so sweet. For a little lady, she had a big heart. Our condolences to all the Millers. You are in our thoughts. - Posted by: Phaedra & Aaron Sydor (Extended family) on: Nov 29, 2014

  • My prayers and thoughts are with you all. God be with you. So sorry I didn't get to see her. It is so sad when family live so close that we can't visit. Hope to see you at the funeral. - Posted by: Barbara Baxter(nee Hansley) (cousin) on: Nov 28, 2014

  • Well...I really know you got a big kick out of me and my scooter...always asking me if I road it to see you, even in the minus temps...I will never forget the day that I wiped out on my way to your place and walked in bleeding everywhere....you told me to sit down and take it easy and helped me get all cleaned up, I thank you for that :) The short time that we spent together meant so much, you are a very special lady to me and I will truly miss you and the moments we spent together. I loved listening to all your stories about the farm, travels, grandchildren and your family and loved to be able to share my only grandson stories and daily pictures of him with you...you are a very blessed lady and now you are at peace with your Len holding his hand in heaven. May God bless you...Karen - Posted by: Karen Jacques (friend and care giver) on: Nov 27, 2014

  • a fine lady who will be lovingly remembered - our thoughts are with you - Posted by: Ken and Marilyn Qually (friends) on: Nov 27, 2014

  • Grammie was the sweetest, funniest, most witty and genuine woman on earth. She really was. Not only was she a loving wife and mother but she was the absolute best grandmother a child could ask for. She made us feel special. Very special. She was the typical grandma.... baking us cookies and sweets and playing games with us and spoiling us on our birthdays and on Christmas. She wore a housedress in the morning with curlers in her hair... and she was probably the cutest, silver-haired grandmother around! What made her so special is that she treated everyone with kindness and made each person feel so important. She listened. She was interested. She was interesting. She cared. She was smart and funny. So funny. Her house was filled with pictures of her family. There wasn't any room left on the walls. And right up until the end, she kept her wit and her humour and her love of life. The most important thing to Grammie was her family...her love for Papa and her sons. The love for her daughters in law, her parents, her brothers and sisters in law, nieces and nephews....her grandchildren...her great-grandchildren. Grammie was a kind friend and a great neighbour and the bottom line is.... everyone loved Grammie. I miss her so much already.
