Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANNE GRAPE (nee WALTON) December 28, 1951 - November 23, 2014 Anne fought a long and courageous battle against cancer, reaching her goal to attend her daughter Ainsley's wedding this August. Anne was born in Sidmouth, England and moved to Winnipeg with her family in 1956. Anne was predeceased by her parents Dr. Richard and Barbara Walton. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Jim, her children David, Ainsley O'Grodnik (Corey) and Jennifer, brother Michael and sister Fiona, nephews and nieces, family overseas, as well as many friends and in-laws. As a young girl, Anne learned to swim at Sherbrook Pool. She soon began a competitive swimming career and trained at the Pan Am Pool with the Cardinal Swim Club. As a member of the Cardinal Swim Club, Anne competed across Canada and the US. In 1968, she earned a position on the Canadian Olympic Team competing in Mexico. Anne continued to swim while attending the University of Guelph. She was honoured with induction into the University of Guelph Sports Hall of Fame. While at Guelph, Anne earned her BA in Early Childhood Education. Anne loved to work with young children and became an instructor with the Early Childhood Education program at Red River College. She wanted to thank all her fellow instructors for their love and visits while she was in the hospital as well as her friends Karen, Jan, Denise and Linda for their kindness. Special thanks to her close friends Pat and Cindy for all the time and care they gave to visit her in the hospital and while she was at home. Anne and her family would like to thank the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their loving care. We would also like to thank the home care providers that so faithfully came to our home to help look after Anne during her long illness. As per Anne's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service will be held at the house. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Anne may be made to a charity of one's choice. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E.J. Just found out that Ann had passed on. Our first jobs in child care were at Gretta Brown Day Nursery and fun times were had together until David arrived in the world at a very young age! Saw Ann in her new position later on and knew how great she was with the students of hers who passed thru our centre! Many people in the field will truly miss her! - Posted by: Margaret Henry (Coworker at Gretta Brown Day Nursery) on: Dec 17, 2014

Anne Walton and I were friends for well over half a century beginning in childhood as next door neighbours at our family cottages. Anne, a future Olympic swimmer, was a soulmate "water baby". We could spend hours & hours swimming, surfing the waves and sliding on the slippery, slimey big reef between our docks. When not in the water, we circumnavigated the Little Island or were intrepid explorers of the Big Island and deep into the woods behind our cottages. Playing Clue on rainy days, devouring her Mother's delicious baking and picnicking at our secret place atop a nearby cliff were all things that made my summers magical. When we got older, Anne wisely and happily married a great guy and together they raised three wonderful kids, all of whom became cherished good neighbours themselves. She will be greatly missed but oh so, So fondly remembered. Cheerful and sparkly humoured to the very end. All my love to her husband Jim and children David, Ainsley and Jenny. And to her older brother Mike and her devoted younger sister Fiona, as well as to all her loyal and exceptionally caring friends in Winnipeg. - Posted by: Mary Ellen Cooke (friend/neighbour) on: Dec 03, 2014

Anne was my Practicum Instructor, many years ago. Anne was so much more; it was like she was my big sister who taught me, laughed with me, listened to me, and respected me. That meant so much to a 18/19 year old! I now have come full circle and work at the college. It was such a blessing to chat with and laugh with Anne again. My thoughts and prayers go out to Anne's family. - Posted by: Sue Sydorchuk (Friend) on: Dec 02, 2014

As I was reading my paper today it was with a heavy heart that I realized that a truly great athlete had passed away. Anne left a mark on me when it came to sportsmanship as I did not know her personally. I was in the 12-14 age group for 100 meter back stroke at Lipsett Hall in Wpg.(and had many 1st ribbons to attest to my strengths) when I went into a race against Anne (who thought she had the race) and swam my heart out to come in second against Anne - being only about a second behind her at the finish. I had seen her eyeball me as best you can while doing a flip turn that meant I'd better power up. I had to control myself from heaving as I finished (as I gave it my "all" )and then she leaned over to my lane and shook my hand. I have all these 1st ribbons I have saved - but the one that truly meant the most was the second ribbon against Anne. I will always remember that race as one of my best "Challenges". - Posted by: Debbie Burns nee Wegner (competetive swimmer born in 1951 in Winnipeg) on: Nov 30, 2014

Over the last few years and especially the last few months, I've grown very close to Anne. She was so caring, loving, honest and wanted the best for everyone. She would never worry about herself, just about her friends and family. She never felt like a mother-in-law, she felt like my mom. Love you Anne! I know you're watching. I'll make sure the girls behave. :) - Posted by: Cory O'Grodnik () on: Nov 30, 2014
