JOHN MICHAEL DAFNIS On the morning of November 27, 2014, at the age of 38, John decided it was time to climb the stairway to Heaven to join his late father Michael and sister Katerina. John was born on April 6, 1976 in Winnipeg. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Natalina Dafnis, his mother Sophia Dafnis, his sister Eleni (Sotirios), his brother Jim (Theofili), and his niece and nephews Spiros, Sofia, Michael and Spiro. Also left to mourn are his in-laws Serafino and Elizabeth Porpiglia, Filippo (Ashley), Anna (Marvin), Melissa and Sabrina. It is difficult to sum up in just a few lines the life of John Michael Dafnis, but the most important thing about John was his passion for life. John loved the art of music; he played in a band with friends and would create his own music at home. He loved literature, history, cooking, challenging his physical strength at the gym and the Greek culture. John was a sports enthusiast and would never miss a game. He enjoyed gardening, his career as an electrician and would fondly look back at his years in the military. John was a man of his word and lived every day to its fullest. He appreciated the small things in life; those things that most people take for granted. It was evident to everyone who met John that he was a truly special person. Among his family, friends, co-workers and the community, he was best known as a passionate storyteller with a great sense of humour. The sparkle in his beautiful blue eyes for the last 10 years was his unconditional love for his soul mate and confidante Natalina. John protected her every minute of every day with his amazing physical and mental strength and comforted her with his wise words and handsome smile. We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Ralph Wong. Words cannot express our gratitude for his passion and dedication to John's health. A special thanks to Dr. Saranchuk, Dr. Srinathan, Dr. Schroeder, Dr. Butler, Dr. MacDiarmid, Dr. Kowaluk, Dawn Kolody, Kathy Kyryluk and the nursing staff of St. Boniface Hospital. An additional thanks to Dr. Chu, Dr. Cheung and Dr. Bjarnason of Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. Relatives and friends are invited to prayers and funeral services to be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Ave. Prayers will be held on Wednesday, December 3 at 7:00 p.m. and funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 4 at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Thomson "In the Park" Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. John lived his life on his own terms. His strength and bravery was, is and will always be an inspiration to all who knew him. 1839 Inkster Blvd. 1006 Nairn Ave. (204) 275-5555

I wish to express to John's family, especially to his wife, my condolences for their loss. - Posted by: Kenneth Davis (Friend (high school)) on: Dec 06, 2014

I didn't see John daily, but when I did, he always put a smile on my face. He always helped my family when they needed his expertise. Being involved at Folklorama, or security, to even being an altar boy, was how I'll remember him. Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Stavros Ioannou (friend) on: Dec 02, 2014

To John, I will never forget the first time I met you and Natalina here at CCMB...I still remember walking into the room to give you your new appts and we all just started talking and we spent a good 20 or so minutes together and after that we developed a good relatiohship for that I have treasured. Your smile and personality said it all to me, and getting to know you and seeing that you are a great Man and seeing the devotation you had for your love Natalina was so appreciated by me. Though I haven't seen you much lately I am however grateful the last time I did see you before you saw Dr. Wong that day...you got mad at me and told me to start eating because I was too skinny...HaHa!! Natalina, John loved you so much and his eyes said it all! His love was strong for you. John will always be by your side and he will make sure you are well taken care of the way he would of taken care of you. As a member of the Gree community and friend of the family, I saw Yianni, during his young years, taking part in different activities, celebrations, dances and cultural events. I always appreciated his kindness, his sense of humor, his smile and specially his good manners. I had the chance to know him better and love him more when he particepated on my play O koumbaros apo tin Ameriki. He was young, hansome, irrestible, we had fun together, during the repetitions and the 3 presentations we gave at the Greek community. I wish I could take some of the pain his mother Sofia or his wif Natalina have right now loosing such a darling son and a caring husband. . We all loved him and appreciated him and his loss is just unbearable. Sofia s'agapo poli Lefco Doche - Posted by: Lefco Doche (One of the many thias John had in the Greek community) on: Dec 02, 2014

On behalf of the Greek Community of Winnipeg I would like to extend our sincere condulences to the Dafnis family and to his extended family and friends. John Dafnis was the finest example of a member of the Greek community of Winnipeg. It is with great sadness that we have lost such a great friend. I personally always looked up to Yianno as a role model during our youth in the Greek community. John's humour and stoic leadership during our younger years at Camp Vasilika, serving as Altar boys, and later performing as a team in the Greek Pavilion of Folklorama is the the very best example of good times, good friends and good memories. John will always be remebered by all in our Greek community, and the many friends he has here. He will be missed by all who knew him.
