KENNETH (KEN) DALE BURWASH It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Kenneth (Ken) Burwash after a lengthy illness at St. Boniface Hospital on Friday, November 28, 2014. Left to lovingly remember Ken are his daughter Karen; sisters-in-law Margaret "Madge" Burwash and Patricia "Pat" Cook; as well by numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; cousins and close friends. He was predeceased by his wife Kathleen "Kay"; parents Ernest and Beatrice Burwash; brother Raymond Burwash; parents-in-law Patrick and Catherine Lynch; and his brothers in law Owen Lynch and Mickey Cook. Ken was born on July 26, 1935 in St. Boniface Manitoba. He grew up in the west end of the city where he attended school including at Daniel McIntyre. In his younger days, Ken was a competitive cyclist and he took part in many races including the race from Winnipeg to Kenora. In 1964 he married Kay and shortly thereafter their daughter Karen was born. Ken worked in the insurance industry in various capacities ending his working life at Manitoba Public Insurance. In 1979, he found sobriety through the help and grace of Alcoholics Anonymous. He was a proud member of the Big Book Group and he devoted much time to helping others with their recovery. Ken truly followed and lived the Twelve Steps. After Kay's passing, he and Karen enjoyed many trips together including an Alaskan cruise with cousins Patsy and Gaetano Lamantia in September. Throughout his illness Ken never complained. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Bernadette Roman Catholic Church, 820 Cottonwood Drive with Rev. Fr. Fred Olds presiding. A private interment will be held at a later date. Karen would like to thank the medical staff of the MSICU, the doctors, nurses, health care aids and occupational therapists of the 6E ward and the pastoral care staff of St. Boniface Hospital for the care they provided Ken and the support they gave to her during his last illness. Karen would also like to thank Don Woods, Marilyn MacKenzie, Eileen B and Eileen "Gran" Ward and Mary Van Eerd-Cook for their love and support during this difficult time. • So very sorry to hear of your Dad's passing, Karen. We were all part of your Dad's group of friends, from way back in the 50's. I went to St. Mary's Academy with your Mother, so I knew them from both sides. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Karen. Keep strong, & may God Bless You. Sincerely, Connie Prynne - Posted by: Connie Prynne (Family Friend) on: Dec 04, 2014

  • We were fortunate to have had an opportunity to know Ken over the past 4 or 5 years. We got together once or twice a year to celebrate birthdays with a special group of friends. Ken had a quick wit and enjoyed talking sports. He never complained and was always cheerful. Karen, you were incredibly attentive and it was wonderful that you made it possible for your dad to travel so much the past few years. We are so sorry for your loss and have you in our thoughts. - Posted by: Gord and Cathy Henwood (Friends) on: Dec 03, 2014

  • I met Ken in 1983 at the Big Book Group. Ken was a kind and gentle soul. He was instrumental in my sobriety and I'm sad to hear of his passing. He truly was a special man. He helped more people than can probably be counted. My prayers go with you. - Posted by: Paul Fulton (Friend) on: Dec 02, 2014

  • I worked with Ken at the claim centre on Pembina Hwy. He was a soft spoken man who always had a smile on his face and never seemed to let much get him down. He spoke often and with pride of his daughter Karen. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Cyndi Rutter (Former co-worker) on: Dec 02, 2014
